I am in the process to converting my '68 GS400 from a TH400 to Muncie 4-speed. In order to do so, the crossmember needs to move forward some six inches or so. Can anyone explain to me what I am supposed to do about the cable guide that hooks to the crossmember (see photo)? To maintain the same relationship, this would have to be longer, I suspect. Did they have different length guides?

Yes, there are different length cables for this. I have the same problem almost. I put a 455 with a TH400 cable in my 70 Skylark and ran across the same situation. I am told OPG,The Parts place as well as Year One sells the correct lenth cables, but I will try my NAPA first.

Thanks, Pat. That was fast and easy. I'll do the same.

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

I don't think NAPA will have it.

Visit www.inlinetube.com and they have it. I buy the cables from them all the time.

I have the cable that was in my car for a 350 trans. I bought a new cable when I went to a 400 trans. If the 350 and 4psd are the same length you can have it.

    cable

    Front cable = 350th and 4spd same
    Center cable = 350th and 4spd same
400th front and center cable are different
Rear cables are the same 4spd,350th and 400th.
I'm in the process of researching 3 different GM front cables now.
If you need a set of cables let me know, we have new GM in stock and on order. :TU:

I am with George on this one..

Call Inline tube, and order a complete set.. in stainless or OE material, your choice..

These cables are exact reproductions of the originals, and the complete set comes with all the new guide hooks and the equalizer and fastening hardware.

Bear in mind a couple of things.. on the restoration front, the current GM parts available can often be incorrect in appearance, or clamping methods to the frame, so restoration type parts are in order here. And in your case, switching to a 4 speed from an auto, means that you prolly have a car full of cables that have been rarely used, I would be surprised if a few of them are not sticky.

You have to change the front and intermediate cable, and the guide hook that secures it to the trans crossmember, so it's not that much more of an expense to replace the rear cables, along with all the clips and fasterners.

Since you will be using the parking brake often now, with the stick, my recommendation would be to replace it all now, and eliminate potential headaches in the future.
