Got my rechromed dash back. Now I need to paint trim on dash. Suggestions for steps? Thought I would use self-etching primer and then paint black. Any suggestions for preparation of chrome and type of black paint to use. Glossy, flat, etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks

If you want to mask the chrome areas, use a Q-tip and Vaseline.

Apply a light coat of Vaseline with the Q-tip.

Spray the black areas with SEM Landau Black.

Then, wipe the Vaseline'd areas to remove the black.

This works great, and was recommended by one of the plastic platers.

SEM makes a 'Trim Black' in both semi-flat and glossy. They are self etching and require no primer.

Thanks to both. The vaseline sounds interesting altho I've already taped. That would have been alot easier. I've seen prior reference to the paints you both recommend and I know the paint on dash is fairly glossy----which would best replicate original? Thanks

Do not use a Gloss Black on there...the original paint and plastic has more of a semigloss sheen (at most). Landau Black or the semigloss Trim Paint mentioned should do the job. You should probably spray a spare part first just to give you an idea of what it will look like.

Thanks--Have some SEM trim black and another dash. Had planned on using on old dash to see how it compares. Thanks again

Can I ask who did your rechroming?
    was it a good job?
    cost?

Im kind of leaning towards a place that will rechrome and repaint the black...

Paul's chrome--expensive-as I recall right at 900 bucks. The dash had pitting and most looks good. Still some pitting visible under new chrome. It's a 67 and has quite a bit of ribbing which is where most of visible pits are located. Superior did bumpers and console lid and console. Sent lid back as chrome didn't take on portion. Both of these pieces pitted and that job not as good altho alot less expensive. The bumpers from Superior are excellent. Paul's also did tail light bezels and they are excellent. Hope this helps. I've got a local guy doing a bunch of smaller pieces and will not get these back for another 2 weeks. I had parts from 36 buick and 41 plymouth replated by different sources and I think the results depends on condition of what sent. I don't think anybody will spend enough time grinding and replacing material to make all pits go away unless you have someone local you can speak with and oversee. Good Luck

Sorry---about the paint. I believe Paul's would repaint but I was afraid to ask about cost--and I need to repaint alot of the interior trim so I thought I could do that myself.
