hi . car : 1965 special 2dr , '69 350 , 4 speed , trunk battery , plain jane - basic options . just got engine in and interior soon , the original wiring is suspect . even quite a few years ago when i drove it home some of the lights etc didn't seem to be just right . front to back wiring - any of our suppliers ( or anyone ) have a nice package that'll clip into place easily ? not worried about oem-correct-original , just has to work correctly and maybe give me a little flexability in case i need to add a thing or two later . newer one wire alternator a good idea ? will they include that flat "ribbon" under seat wiring going to the back of the car or will it be more universal ? steering column wiring ? may use a remote starter solonoid . any advice or ideas appreciated . thanks . del

I've always used M&H Electrical Fabricators, Santa Fe Springs, California. And, they will work with you to add wires, modify looms/connections as needed. Their workmanship and products are second to none.

Painless wiring has some dependable fuse blocks and they also supply harnesses with keyed columns. I had tons of electrical issues with with my Volkswagen Cabriolet. With every thing being custom and rebuilt or new in the car I got sick of the gremlins getting me, so just before I installed the Haltech standalone engine management, I took a pair of wire cutters out of my tool box and cut out every piece of wire from the headlights to the taillights and every thing inbetween. I got a 12 circuit fuse box from painless and started wiring. I had a bunch of brand new wire in tons of colors that came as a PLC harness for some machinery at my job, but they reused the old harness and I got my hands on the new one, the Harness had about 220 wires in 16, 14, 12, and 10 gauge at 125 feet long. So I opted to strip and use the harness because it had plenty wires in different colors, every thing I would need. It turned out alot simpler than I tought, the fuse block is clearly labled and it comes with detailed instructions. and now the harness going to the rear of the car now does the same task with six wires instead of the twenty something wires in the factory harness. My Cabriolet has alot of sensetive electronics and I no longer get the electrical problems that I had. I would strongly recomend a painless setup. It was easier than instaling an oem harness.
    Good luck with your wiring.

thanks 2.0 . my wiring is very basic - one speed wipers and power nothing . i'm sure one of these types of kits will be fine , i'm just not "electrical" so i want to research a little before i dive in . i'll keep checking plus call them first before i get something . del

All but 1 after market wiring "manufacturers" get their looms built from M & H. This was revealed to me after a visit to M & H, and actually seeing a "Painless" loom being built.

good morning.finally rec'd the painless catalog in mail friday and had a chance to compare the two over the weekend.so here is a little uneducated fyi:
1-selected both internet sites and ordered a free catalog from each.both asked for some general car info on the order form.
2-within 1 day rec'd e-mail info from ron francis with a hello and a short recommendation using my basic info.no response from painless .
3-rec'd francis catalog in about 3-4 days.rec'd painless catalog in about 8-10 days as promised.ron francis is in PA and painless is outa TX,not as close.called both locations and talked to real person almost right away and they both asked similar questions-connector types, alternator used, ignition requirements, etc.
4-both catalogs are good sized well done informative catalogs.good pics and descriptions and not only alot of wiring kits to choose from but also a large selection of smaller parts-switches,relays,adapters etc.the painless catalog is standard current "muscle car" lookin catalog-the ron francis catalog has a different feel to it with a "street roddy" flavor that contains some cool lookin items .also the ron francis catalog contains several pages of electrical tips and expainations and pics that, for me especially, will come in handy.
5-pricing.for painless i just ran the part #'s through summit racing and jegs web sites.they were both within a few bucks of each other.the ron francis catalog had pricing listed.
    painless#10102-gm 12 circuit w/o column key-$323*
    painless#10202-gm 18 circuit w/o column key-$363*
    painless#20103-gm muscle car 12 circuit-$410
    painless#20104-gm muscle car 18 circuit-$480
*add a few bucks if ign key in column.
muscle car harness kit looks about the same except i think includes bulkhead/firewall connector.
    ron francis#WR85-chev/gm 12 circuit "retro" kit-$270
    ron francis#BB99-gm "bare bonz" 8 fuse/10 circuit kit-$370
    ron francis#WP66-gm "express" 18 circuit kit-$430
the "rf" retro kit looks very similar to the painless #10102 kit.the bare bonz and express kits include a custom/patented fuse block that incorporates "select a circuit" fuses to easily switch a circuit from battery power to key power just by switching the fuse location.the impression i got was that ron francis does not sell/recommend the use of bulkhead connectors as that can be a problem area down the road.but would be needed if "restoring" a car i guess.thats about it.hope its some good fyi for somebody.thanks.del

alternator on , switched over to a slightly smaller double pulley so i could run two belts , had to notch small area in alternator bracket ( non ac ) to clear a raised pad on rear of alternator - not a big deal . ron francis wiring kit came monday ups , looks good , about what i expected . del
