When you mention straps for mounting the trans cooler to the radiator, do you mean the "through-the-radiator-fins" zip-strip types? If so, I'd recommend mounting it somewhere else, because putting those straps through the radiator can cause leaks over time, plus both the trans cooler and the radiator will both work better if they're apart from each other. I mounted my trans cooler right behind the grill, way out in front of the radiator, using black zip-strips around the end frame (not through it's fins) and the recessed grill fins. Can't see it from the front unless you get down right in front of it and look closely, and it works great :TU:

I'd think a 175-degree F thermostat would be just fine for where you're at, with all that cool Bavarian weather.

"Don't Mess With Bavaria, We've Got The Bier"
    - Now, THERE'S a slogan!!! :beer :beer :beer

btw, I was born in the German hospital in Munich, Dad was at the Czech border (US Army) at the time, and I joined the Army myself to get the "paid tour" of Germany, what a deal! I enjoyed Bavaria a LOT :TU:
    Gr Gott!

    James,

I hate to tell you this, but Bavaria beer is from the Netherlands, with a tradition going back to the year 1719:

And you can go into any coffeeshop to buy soft drugs......... :bglasses:

But when it's easy to buy, people will loose their obsession for it.
    Not illegal = no fun.

Ok... one problem follows the other one...

since we have the buick, the starter doesnt run round. Now today I tried a lot and had the engine running a few minutes. I was adjusting the dwell.
Then I turned off the ignition to connect the timing light, and that was it. I wasnt able to start the engine again. I didnt need pretty long until the bat got weak. I took out jumper cables, but the starter needs so much power, I always have to wait a few minutes to charge the bat again with the other car running, until I can try the starter.
It turns a few times, but then the bat goes low again. I was so stupid and moved the distributor a little, so Im pretty sure the timing is off now! What position of the distributor is the best to get the engine running again? :ball:

I think Ill get a bier now :beer

    Jrgen,

I'll be in Regensburg the 3rd week of April, can you wait that long....?

Check your points (why don't you get a least an HEI ???) before you try to start the car again

Since you didn't turn it a lot, you should be okay by starting and tuning the dwell angle at the same time until the engine starts running again.

Put the battery on a charger overnight and you will have enough power to work things out tomorrow.

General guide lines if you can't get it running doing the above:

Put the timing mark on your harmonic damper at 0 degrees, make sure #1 cylinder is at TDC. Doing so, the rotor should point to the terminal on the cap where the spark wire for cylinder #1 is at.

See that the points are opening up and check the gap.

Now the engine should start and you can fine-tune it with the timing light and a tacho meter.

Did you pull the vacuum hose from the distributor and blocked it off ?

    Good luck !

Well, tomorrow is a holiday here, and I took off the next week. I want to start the work on the body tomorrow. Itll get a new paintjob next week!
I just want to engine running asap because I can work on the engine afterworks, but I cant do all the work for the paintjob, so this need to be done during my vacation. :(

I tried to get it running with connected and disconected vacuum. Right now its disconnected and blocked.

Ill charge the battery over night.

Im just wondering, because the other car I used to jumper cables on has 2 good batteries in. The engine was running and when I tried to start the buick the starter turned a little and then the lights went out....
Shouldnt it work with jumper cables???

Im guessing the starter pulls to much power. Maybe its time to rebuild it?!?
Well, Im waiting for the fresh loaded battery tomorrow. Lets see what happens then.

    Yeah,

    Karfreitag, I've noticed that:

More and more white-number-plate cars were showing up on our boulevard today, it will be another German Easter at the Dutch West coast...... :spank:

It's not unusual for a V-8's dead battery to need a couple of minutes charging from the "live" vehicle's alternator, the old-style, non-gear-reduction starters draw a lot of current. When I jumpstart, I'll engage the choke's high-idle cam so that the engine is doing about 1200 rpm for max alternator output, then let it charge the dead car for 5-10 minutes. Usually works to start the engine, but if your dist has been moved WAY out of place, you can eat up the battery trying...to get that dist back into the ballpark...

You can get the distributor back really close to where you want it by turning the engine over until the dist rotor is pointing at the #1 terminal, then until the timing mark on the balancer is lined up with whatever setting you want (I'd shoot for 6-8 degrees BTDC as a starting point). Now that you've got the crank where you want it, you turn the distributor until the points are just opening. (I've even seen guys turn the ignition on, and watch for the tiny spark as the points open, but you don't need to be THAT accurate.) Tighten down the dist, and with a good battery, it should start, then you can warm up and set the timing where you want it.

Of course, while you're waiting on that battery, you could pull the starter...take it apart and give it a good cleaning / going-over...

It's hard to know when to stop!

Well, I charged the bat over night and tried it again today morning. Turned the key and the engine started! But after it got warm a little it died again and I wasnt able to get it back to life again :ball:
Bat is charging again right now. Ill give it a try in 1 or 2 hours again...

    Come on Jrgen,

Stop mocking around with a bad battery like that, buy a new one with a good cranking capacity instead. Something for a big diesel engine or something like that. Not expensive at all, and this will sort out at least one of your problems :TU:

    Hey, got it working....

    a little!

Idle is good again. It starts, but when I accelerate a little, it seems there are some missfires on the passenger sides cylinders. I might be the spark plugs, maybe they got wet by playing around that much. Im going to clean them and try it again.

BTW. dwell and timing are adjusted :)
