Did all 70 GS cars come equipped from the factory with the aqua houndstooth vinyl floormat in the trunk? I assume all had the houndstooth cardboard circle on the spare tire as opposed to the houndstooth vinyl cover?. What color was the original plating on the locking device in the center of the cardboard circle?
All original cars I have seen had the black cardboard circle on the spare tire but it was also speckle (spelling) painted like the inside of the trunk (I'm sure there are exceptions and some may have been just black). Just take a look at old unrestored cars and see what I mean (usually a few on ebay at all times). I have several photos and road tests I can post if you can't find a picture elsewhere. Duane sells a nice black piece that you can spray with the trunk paint.
Thanks Gary. I think you can get those turnkey so I need to take the path of least resistance. I have more things to do on more cars than I can do. I bet you do too. I appreciate you and Mark taking the time to respond.
I ALWAYS remove my spare tire, jacking hardware AND THE TRUNK MAT when I return from a show. The vinyl mats WILL trap any humidity under them and start the rusting process. REMOVE THOSE MATS!!! STORE YOUR CAR IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT AND LEAVE THE TRUNK LID AJAR!!!
Noticed some condensation on the trunk floor in my '71. Read George N.'s article a few times in the past & he makes a good point. Now I have a real nice top for my worktable.
I have not seen a spare tire board that was already speckle painted, it you do find one please post the info here. Problem is that even if you find one that is already done, chances are that if would not match your trunk since the vendor probably used different paint that you did on the inside of your trunk. Here is a picture of an old unrestored trunk of a '70 Stage 1 that was on ebay a while back.
I read somewhere on here you can glue felt to the underside of the trunk mats to help fix that condensation problem. Sounds like a good idea.
I used some of the jute material GM uses in mid-90's and newer trunks. It seems more like recycled rags than jute. I didn't glue it to anything.
Both of my 70's had speckle, at least as far back as 1976 on one, and 1984 on the other. WHERE DO YOU GET THE BLACK TIRE BOARDS??? I will just go with the flow.p
May be other places that sell the spare tire board but Duane sells them: http://www.classiccarinteriors.com/products.htm Every original '70 I have ever seen has had speckle paint on the spare tire board. 71-72s seem to be just black.
here is an example of an original 70 GS spare tire board. This car is currently for sale on http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=145844
If you want to keep the trunk mat in, go to Lowes and buy the dessicant bags that have a hanger on them. Hang the dessicant from the trunk rods. Keeps the trunk 100% dry. It works.
My original board is black but also has some splatter paint overspray on it. Most all the originals I've seen were this way. I can't explain how it/they got that way, as the original spare itself has no overspray. Just passing the info on.
severla winters ago, when i put my 72gs into storage, i forgot to remove the trunk floor mat. a couple of months later, i remembered and removed the mat. u guessed it. it had started to surface rust roght thru the spatter paint. so i had to sand down the affected areas and re-spatter. from april to november, i place piece of plasticboard, cut to fit, under the trunk mat. works for me. where the spare tire boards in the 1972 gs/skylarks black or spattered?
