After much scratching of heads over what to do with the bottom of the car, this is what we did.

The problem is that I wanted the bottom of the car painted, but I also wanted to drive the car so it needed some kind of protection. Undercoating has gotten a bad rap for hiding bad bodywork or corrosion, so didn't want that. Also didn't want to be doing rock chip touchups on the bottom either, so in the end we went with rockguard on the bottom of the body to give it some flexability and sound-deadening, then he sprayed semi-gloss black over that, up the firewall and across the top.

It has some texture but does not hide the panels. We'll see how it holds up...it looks really good.

The odd reflections are from dust reflecting the flash...

Straight paint would have been the best. What did you guys do??

    Hi Tim
I just spoke with my body man about this Saturday. He uses rock guard some times. But what he suggested is to use a rust enamel paint (Dupont I think). It comes in gloss black and flat black. Mix them to get a semi gloss then just spray it. He did it on his 69 Camaro several years ago and the paint has held up very well. He drives the car every day! I'm planning on doing that to my 67 when I get it back. I'll post some pics when finished.

Well that makes sense...I've heard it isn't as durable but you know how it goes...I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. I just figured we would get the options out there....

one thing that swayed me was I looked at a car that had been done like this 8 years ago, and it was still very nice, and still very clean (you can't clean undercoating).

The bottom of my shell was very nice, just trying to tone down road noise and vibes a little bit. Is the dupont paint more durable than standard stuff?

Sounds like a good choice, Tim!
I've used Duplicolor spray-on truck bedliner coating on the floor repairs on my daily driver.... It has held up well, and is easy to maintain.... Some brands are now available in colors....

A urethane-based paint will hold up better than an enamel-based paint. It will, of coarse, cost alot more too!
