    Numbers Matching ??
    He didn't check the numbers....
If , he had bothered to check the numbers, He would have found that they did Not match.
GM didn't match engine numbers with body numbers before 1958

Yup, James got it right; the numbers don't match and that guy was talking off the point on his head. He obviously figured he struck gold, and unfortunately for that car, he just pounded sand. He's not going to recover his costs, in fact he might find that doing a straight 8 is significantly more expensive than he thought if that is still the 248 cu in motor. It's not a SBC that can be slapped together with a couple of bucks and some gasket-goo.

There are others out there, some in better shape. I guess the only lesson that can be gleaned from this is to be better prepared with cash when looking at an old car; - sometimes the first offer is the best and cash on the spot talks. The likelihood of a deal going down when the buyer says " give me a couple of days" drops drastically as both sides have nothing but time to think about it; the buyer thinking "yeah, it's cheap enough..." and the seller thinking, "maybe I'm letting it go too cheap..."

You know how that's going to end...
