Hey all, Just got my shop manual 3 weeks after installing my cylinder head on my '53 263. I was using a Chilton manual from the library. Anyway, the shop manual mentions that the head bolts on the driver's side enter the water jacket and some sealer should be used. The Chilton manual didn't mention that, and I just oiled all the old head bolts and fired away. My gut tells me this shouldn't be a problem; they didn't have anything on them when they came out...somebody back me up, because I don't want to pull the head again and dump all that antifreeze into the motor for no reason. Thanks! Aaron
Sealing Head Bolts Just thinking out loud Aaron ! o No: Can you drain the antifreeze first - then remove and apply sealer to the head bolts and retorque them ? :TU:
I thought about pulling them one by one, but I think that would upset the torque on the head...keep those brainstorms coming!!!
dengine boo boo You CAN remove the bolts one at a time and RETORQUE them back. That will not hurt anything IF the head isnt disturbed any while the bolts are out. What messes things up is when the head is moved and the "seal" on the head gaskets is disturbed. Just dont make the mistake of turning the engine over while the bolts are out. I have done this a lot of times and never had any problems with it.
That's interesting Doc...I was worried that retorquing them would upset the seal on the gasket and cause all kinds of problems, but on the other hand, with 22 head bolts, you wouldn't think one at a time would make much difference either. Thanks for the input!
