Only $394 worth of brake damage

  1. So my Tacoma has been making a pretty constant sqealing sound for about 3 weeks now out of the front brakes. This was happening all the time, not just when the brakes were applied. Brakes only make a sqeal all the time when the little harmonic clip is vibrating against the rotor telling you you're pads are worn, right?

So I call Meineke, and it will be $30 to throw a new set of pads on there. I drop it off at Meineke this morning. I ask to upgrade from whatever pad was on the truck because the pads I have now are the dustiest pads I have ever owned. In like 30,000 miles worth of driving those pads made more dust than any other pads I have known. I trust this Meineke as I know the owner, and I don't know squat about disc brakes.

So anyway, I get a call back from Meineke Midday. He says "do you want the bad news or the bad news?" I figure I have to throw a set of rotors on the truck as well. Nope.

The pistons on my original equipment brake calipers have been sticking for whoever knows how long. The driver's side was sticking so bad that I wore my pads to the rivets on that side, trashing out my rotor. The passenger side wasn't that bad, but of couse you dont throw a new rotor on one side and have a thin one on the other, lest you have a pull for the rest of your braking career.

This Meineke has a contract with Carquest, and if they cannot get it through Carquest they can get it through the dealer, but that is all. So the owner was very nice to me and advised me to purchase my own parts through AutoZone or Advance, and let him put them on. So I have $159 worth of parts, and $235 labor, so a total of $394.

I guess now I know why my brakes were squealing all the time and why there was so much brake dust :)
