Hey guys I need a little help to find and determine a date code on an 8.2 axle housing I have. I bought it as a stage 1 housing with a ON code on the tube wheres the date code ? I found a J229 on side of the housing near the pinion. Any help would be appreciated.

It could be near the ON but many 70 axles did not have a date code stamp at all. I have one I cold never find the stamp. Sometimes it is better as it will be good for any build date car.

Hey Dave thanks for the answer how close should the date code be on the tube be to the On code ? I might have to dig it out of my stash and have a better look.

They date was often right next to the two letter code but don't count on it. You need to examine every inch of both tubes.

J229 means that axle centre section was cast Sept 22 1969, the entire rear axle assembly would have been assembled shortly after that.
Assembly date is stamped by ON stamp on axle tube.

Hi Rich, My ON axle has no date stamp. I have another 3.42 from 70 and it has no stamps at all I can find.

    Hi Dave
Many axles do not have assembled date codes stamped into axle tube, many engines and transmission do not either!
Perfectly normal, as a worker had to do this process and many did not bother.
