Ok, so I need a new water pump and...

  1. I had Mark Dalquist take a look before I ordered a new pump, and he confirmed that mine is bad, has a fair amount of wiggle to the shaft. Didn't sound good this morning either. The balancer is in tough shape too, so as long as we're taking it apart...

I'm going to order from TA, but I'm a little uncertain about which to order. I have a 71 350 block, but their price list does not list a 71. Now, I think it is a long shaft pump, because the pulley has an unused groove for an a/c belt. I'm guessing the LeSabre the engine came out of was an a/c car, which is supposed to require the long shaft pump?

I've read a ton of threads on here that turn up in a "water pump" search, but want to be a bit more certain before I place an order. I wish I could post a pic of my setup, but my camera is in Virginia this week. Does anyone have a pic of both short and long shaft water pumps they could post?

If you can post the pulley part numbers it may help David. Just a thought.

  3. Well, it's not coming apart until I have the pump and balancer and take the car to Mark's place. I'll see if I can spot a part # on the pulley though.

  4. How 'bout 1235797... didn't even have to turn it over. I believe it is the long shaft pump but..:Do No:

  5. TA online says:

    TA 1536A Replacement Water Pump, `64-`70 300-340-350 & V6, `66-`71 Jeep 225 V6, 350 V8

    TA 1536B Replacement Water Pump, `73-`81 350, `75-`87 V6

  6. NAPA shows this pic for a 71 LeSabre 350. Is this the long version?

  7. And this one for a 68 350.

  8. Ok, between these 2 pics, I shouldn't have any problem figuring what is currently on my car...

  9. Mine looks to be similar to the longer one, like this TA 1536B pump, but it's listed as 73-81.

Can you read the water pump number. The water pump on my 70 GS motor is 1374977. I know your trying to find 71 but thought it may help.

  11. I can make out just 1 # on the top part of the pump, 31239. The pulley is about 2 1/4" deep, plus there is a 2" spacer before the fan. (no fan clutch)

need me to stop by and take a pic?

    Now or in the morning?:Brow:

  13. Ed, I'll be sleeping by the time you get here...

A pic might not help, unless I find some time to get the fan out of the way. It's just me and my girl and the lab this week, so I have my hands full around here... :Dou:

  14. Well, I'm home with a kid that's not feeling well, so maybe I'll find a minute or 2 to take the fan off and get a better look.

  15. ok, pulled the shroud/fan/pulley, and what I have is a shaft that extends approx 1 1/16" beyond the mounting flange, while the overall depth of the whole pump is about 5 1/8", from the pump-timing cover surface, to the end of the shaft. With those dimensions, I should be able to call TA and get the correct pump ordered. I wonder if they can supply new mounting bolts too... Some were in pretty rough shape when we had it apart last year.

I think you got it figured out david. Good luck!

  17. Just got off the phone with Dave at TA. Turns out they do not have the correct water pump listed either on the website, nor in their catalog. He says the 71/72 350 water pump is a 2yr only pump, and is # TA-1536 with no letters on the end. Their listings only show the A and B versions available. The 1536 will be in their new catalog, and they do have it in stock now, but it has not been previously. So my new balancer, water pump, and bolt set should ship today. :bglasses:

BTW, Dave says they fired the wagon up... :Brow:

David did he specify why it was a 2yr only part was it due to the smog pump?

  19. Sorry Phil, he didn't say. I was in a hurry, didn't think to ask him what was different. I gave him my pump's dimensions, and he checked his to match it up. I have no idea if my pump is original to this 71 block, I kind of doubt it. I checked NAPA online for part #'s, and I do believe they listed a different pump # for 71 also.

Cool, Thanks for the info. I did not know there was a diffrence other than long and short.
