oil spraying out around the front oil seal

    Under fairly high RPM, with car sitting static, I've noticed an oil spray out of the front oil seal behind the dampner area. Enough oil that it sprays to or near the front tires. Any thoughts. Engine has virtually no miles on it since last rebuild. Seal is the modern type. What may have caused this problem? Any alternatives besides taking the cover off and replacing the seal? Should the front of the crank shaft be checked? Appreciate it.

    I had this same problem with my 455. I found out that if the pcv valve was not getting enough vaccum then it done that. I have the modern seal from TA performance and it drips just a little bit when the car is off but will not leak during run.

    Is the oil deflector in it... in between the harmonic balancer and timing gear? Not sure if that helps or not.

    Someone has a picture of it on here...

    A few things to look at.
    - First, is the oil slinger installed? It goes between the crank sprocket and the backside of the timing cover.
    - Second, the oil seal needs to be installed so the "split" side of the seal faces inward. This is the side of the seal that can be opened and you can see the spring inside.
    - Third, did your shop feel uncomfortable with the seal riding on the knurling of the balancer? If they did and they polished it off, it is enough to lose the fit to the seal.
    - And Lastly, A PCV valve that is not working correctly or not installed at all, will cause excessive crankcase pressure that can cause abnormal leaks from all sorts of places. Pretty much finds the weakest point and causes a "mystery" leak.

    I haven't looked at how the seal was installed but will not take it back off for that purpose. I have the pcv valve hooked up. The balancer I have is the ATI product part of the balancer world.

    Thanks for the replies. Well, the motor is a stout 464, so a lot of the "stuff" done was "way after market". Here's what I found when I pulled the timing cover off. man did I hate to do that. The seal had a crimp in it, at the very bottom. This caused the rubber portion of the seal to lay down right at the bottom where the oil was leaking. I've got two "national's" ordered from the local speed shop. This should solve the problem, hopefully. I'm gonna test and tune the car, if I get it back together, this Wednesday evening. The numbers suggest, with the weight of the car around 3000, 9's. Let's see what happens. Thanks again to all. Really do appreciate it.

    That's exactly what "my shop" did 4 years ago. It just yesterday has shown a drip on the shop floor. These are the same guys who put a rope seal in the rear because they didn't like the neoprene and "had good luck with rope in Ford FEs". Grrrr.

    Can the front seal be changed easily? Like when doing a cam swap for instance? :Brow:"9s?" RUNUTS!?

    Anytime the timing cover is off the seal will be easy to change. If it is a TA cover you can change the seal with the timing cover on, because the seal is front mounted. But it still would be much easier with the cover off.

    changed the seal today, pain in the butt, but got it done. All is O.K. or so it seems. Yo, Gary, Car will be going out Wednesday evening if these o'l legs hold up. By all accounts, if the car can get dialed in, it should run 9's. Maybe not with me driving, because the racing seat would be missing and found somewhere up my----well, it'll be there. Thanks Dave for the info on the seal from TA, appreciate it.

    I had this problem also. It is in the process of being fixed now. I had oil everywhere under the passangers side of the car. Got the new front seal from TA Performance. I hope it fix's the problem and they do it right for me.
    Anything I should tell the mechanic before he starts the project?
    Thanks;

    I had this same problem about 7 years ago with one of the new front covers from Canada. The seal bore was so far off that it left a gap between the seal and the balancer that you could see through. I measured the front cover up for location and rebored the seal pocket and built a bushing for the seal to press into, problem solved. I think there may have been some rejects in the front covers that were sold as NOS back then, I doubt that problem would exist in the TA cover.
