Woodie, Take both the gears out of the pocket. Then grab a handfull of vaseline and pack the whole pocket. Then push the gears in to the pocket, one at a time. The vaseline will be displaced by the gears. Then skim off the excess, clean the gasket surface, and assemble the pump cover. Yes, it is messy, but it works. You want all the air space around the gears taken up with vaseline. If you have an oil pressure gauge, you can spin the pump with a drill to prime it.
