Hey guys, when I removed the oil pump cover off of the timing cover housing I noticed two small approx. 3/8 diameter holes
just above the spindle itself. One of these holes has a metal mesh screen covering it, the other had some poorly repaired attempt of another screen installed in it which was half hanging out of the hole. Im guessing this is possibly a filter by-pass hole?
In any case is their parts availible to replace these small fitted screens or is it a matter of replacing the cover itself with a new one. the motor had no oil problems beforehand but I dont want to let this go uncorrected. Any help on this would be great.

    Thanks Glenn.

There is a small screen in the oil pump cover that goes from the regulator. I don't think that it is something that is replaceable. Take a look at the screen and if it is not torn or clogged just clean it and put it back together. Should be fine.:TU: :beer

??? Huh??? I've been inside many Buick oil pump covers(3.8L, 350, 455) and don't remember EVER seeing a screen inside the oil pump cover OR the oil pump in the timing chain cover...

I'm with ilikebmx999 on this one...Pics of what you are talking about would be very helpful...

OK, the screen is in the top hole.

Shouldn't that be a fiber disc with a light spring behind it for the oil filter bypass? If that was a "screen" you'd get no flow through the filter.

A phenolic fiber disc might look like a screen, though, at first glance.

the disc in my 455 was blocked open by what appeared to be broken fragments of valve stem seals, that I had to pick out with tweezers.

It is a fiber disk, not a screen.

I took the one apart from my 67 engine today. The pump cover is different from later models. There is actually a screen on the bypass circuit of the pump. It is late now so I will clean it up and post a picture tomorrow of what is being discussed.

I believe that is 1967 big block only, one of the many oddities of the `67 big blocks.

I think the answer is there now. The 430 I'm running is out of a 67 riv. The picture mlh48 provided is exactly what I got. The screen is falling out of its hole on mine. If this is a "last ditch" attempt of a oil filter only when the motor is in by-pass mode then is it a must have on a well maintained motor that will most likley not be put into a clogged oil filter condition? Thanks Glenn.

hmmm...First time for everything...It's not saying much, but I've never seen one like that before...

If it was me, I would just put the later model pump cover on it, if it would be a direct swap and not cause any problems...Maybe Dave@TA can jump back in here with an answer...
