OK... So I have to take the oil pan off of the 455 to check something. I have the bolts out, the pan loose, motor mount bolts out, tranny mount bolts out, driveshaft out, but no way it will clear the crossmember to remove it. Has anyone found a "safe" area to jack up the engine so neither the owner (me) or the engine will be damaged? I may eventually have to remove it but it would be nice to check out the bottom end first. ( Heard a noise... A bad noise...:jd: )

There actually is, supposedly, a position the crank can be turned to, so that the oil pan will slide out from underneath the crank and over the crossmember. I'll be darned if i can do it.

There is nowhere to push the engine up. Don't use the balancer. I would get an engine hoist, take out the motor mount bolts, and lift it from the heads just a little, to slide out the pan.

Well, I would really just yank the motor, but I have done that just to clean headers:puzzled:

Hope you don't find any catastrophic damage

I've always just pulled the engine. MUCH easier..:Dou:

I really don't think there should be a problem jacking up the engine from the balancer though. I've done it before and never had any problems arise later from doing this.:Do No: I highly doubt that the weight of the engine would BEND the end of the crank or anything like this!

But if you have a cherry-picker, you probably should use it.:Smarty:

Well I've NEVER heard this before! Chris, if you or anyone else could confirm this and tell me which way the crank would be positioned, I'd LOVE to hear it!!

I don't know if I'd ever pull the pan this way, but ya never know! Might have to use this trick on the highway or something.:Do No: I LOVE to learn 'shortcuts', or different methods of wrenching!!

    THANKS!:beer

I was thinking more of damaging a balancer than the crank

I am going to abort trying to pull the oil pan off while the engine is in the car. It will take awhile but I'll get the engine pulled and relay the results to all of you.
My gut feeling says a rod bolt(nut) has failed...:moonu:
