I remember a question about this but I could not find the thread! I did a crude measurement of the capacity of the center sump (Wildcat) and the rear sump (GS-Skylark) type of oil pans. Both pans held 5 quarts easily, and at 5 quarts the oil would just be getting into the shallow part of the pan on both. The GS pan had room for more oil than the Wildcat pan by approximately 1/2 inch more pan showing. My conclusion was that I could put 5 quarts plus some for the filter and not have the crank drowning in oil.

Ted it deserves to have its own thread. That dipstick that reads fill with 4 quarts is a killer to our Nailheads.
Thanks for confirming 5 QTs= full for us.

On Earlier nailheads, My 56 322 Requires 7 Quarts with Filter on an Oil Change.
I really don't know why Larger Nailheads would require less oil.:puzzled:
