Ok, newbie with older car here!!!

I have an 1960 oil filled air breather, it look like the main body of the breather it completely sealed with a fiber filter of some kind inside, i can see the fiber by the sloted holes in the bottom of the breather, my question is how can i clean the filter out as i cant seem to see how it comes apart?
The base were the oil sits comes off with a single nut.

I had the same oil bath breather on my '63 GMC 305 V6. I drove that truck 20 years and never cleaned the filament or mesh. Just changed oil regularly. That was the best running and most reliable motor I ever owned in my life! If the body hadn't rusted so badly, I'd still be driving it today. I'm not saying you don't need to wash out the breather, just that I never did.

If I recall correctly, the service manual for my '55 sais to clean it with kerosene. I cleaned mine in the parts washer at my shop. (I'm a mechanic.) Parts washers are usually filled with mineral spirits. Just drain the excess cleaning solvent out really good before reinstalling it. ---Zach.
