I renewed my CDL last month, 28 days before it expired. It can be renewed up to 90 days before it expires. I was asked if I wanted to renew it for 8 years instead of the normal 4, so I chose 8. They mailed my license to me a few weeks later and I see that the expiration date is my birthday in 2030, not 2031. I go to the BMV, wait for 20 minutes until they called my number. I explain the problem to the employee and she says that with a CDL, in order to get 8 years, it must be renewed on or after your birthday! I asked her what if your birthday is on the weekend or you are on the road? Should I have waited until it expired and drive to the BMV with an expired license? She said yes, if I want the full 8 years! What a joke!
Although I retired last November from Penn Dot,I am planning on keeping my CDL license and hazardous endorsement. I go in a week to get my new yearly DOT physical..Penn Dot is as messed up as well..
Must be CDL specific, because when I renewed my regular Ohio DL, I opted for the 8 year renewal (June of '22, 5 days before my birthday) & I got the full 8 year renewal. God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ar-transport-hauling-open-or-enclosed.614419/
It is CDL specific. I asked them if I only renewed for 4 years, would I only actually get 3 1/2. She said no, I would get the full 4.
So, per the Ohio BMV, I contacted the Ohio Attorney General. He said to contact the BMV! I contacted the BMV through a live chat and was told that the way the law is written, it renews for 8 birthdays, not years! There's about 41k? CDL holders in Ohio. At overcharging $12 per license, the state makes almost a half million dollars from a poorly written law.
