I was looking at posi units in JEGS and some specified the number of axle splines. I was woundering if any one knows how many on a 1971, 10 bolt, 8.5 in a buick Skylark/GS
I would rather ask than pull my axle back out and count at this time.
Cruisn the coast has started and I thought I might run up on a better unit than I have.
Most likely I will have to buy a new unit.
What is recomended for street/strip. Also I would be using the 3:73 gears from the one I built several years ago. Thanks..

28 spline is stock for the 71-72 Buick 8.5 10 bolt. When I built my 8.5, I upgraded to Moser 30 spline axles, and matching Eaton Posi.

Thanks, Thats what I needed to know. Right now I have a posi from a S-10.
I'm sure with the 455 it will not hold up with drag radials.

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

S10 units are 7.5 or 7.625 unless you have an S10 Xtreme rear axle carrier and those should be 30 spline......GM went to 30 spline axles in 1988.....also, make sure it is not a gov-lock design...bad news waiting to happen.

Also, 3.73 is for a city car...if you plan on any hwy or interstate use, go with 3.08 gears.

Well, I looked up some Gove locks. Being its the original 8.5 10 bolt and I used the stock axle shafts. The unit looks to be a Gove Lock G-80, 28 spline. iTS GOT TO GO. I sent a pm to Monzaz to see what he has. Thanks
