hotrodet DONT FLY WITH OUT A/P MX

How about some cool O Darn stories. Like I rember one of the first year I went to a NMCA race in indy at IRP. I think it was pat musie or some one like that. They had a big red GTO withe a big blower on it. The car came up on one rear wheel, slamed down on the track hooked hard and almost hit the wall. Next run the blower belt flew off. I was thinking man it sucks to be this guy. Bad luck alway hapens to me when a bunch of people are wathcing. Like this, I am at a 1/8 track 2nd run top end the crank heavy metel in the counter weight shifts fwd and catches a rod in my 494cid. LESSON LEARNED- weld in weights. Or one time my dad comes up from florida we put a 4:10 gear in the 12 blt go to the track with the 67 using 10" slicks. 2nd pass through the traps (where bad things happen to me-at the traps and on the 2ed pass) BANG drive saft snaps foot back from the pinnon and destroyed a set of mufflers. LESSON learned- put a winch on the trailer because 3800lbs is hard to push, O yea little 400 cid can make some tork. So if you got a O darn this is no S-@#! story that usuly results in some $$$$$$$$. Lets get some dirt out and relive some musury so we can all have a good laugh. I got a lot of aircraft storys mechanics tell when they go to training. Mabe this post will work like that. Would love to hear some entertaning stuff. The best part would be to learn a Lesson that some one could use and save themselves some heart ake and money. :Smarty:

Here's an O darn story from when I was 20...

After one year of working as a local auto parts store hack, I decided to apply for college at the University of Washington - like I should have done prior to HS graduation.

I got accepted, and just had to work through one more summer at the auto parts store.

    I had a 72 GS350 with a 69 400. My best ET with it through the TH350 and 3.08 rear, on street tires, was a 15.08. I knew it could run 14.9's.

So I decided just before ending the season and heading to college I'd take it one more time to the track. I brought my girlfriend at the time along with a coworker and his girlfriend (separate car).

It was a Friday night, in 1989, and the next day was the Super Chevy Show. A few Chev's were there to get some runs in before the show, etc...

I get up to do a minimal power brake to clean off the street tires. I knew enough to know that all you need to do is get the pebbles and cigarette butts off - nothing smokey.

I give it partial brake and start pushing the gas. Just before as the rear tires start going, there was a clunk, clatter, clatter, and my engine revved freely, while in drive, with my foot on the brake... "O, darn!:Dou:

We pushed it out next to a tree to retrieve the following day with a flatbed. Luckily the other couple had a car with them to get me home. It turned out that something in the original posi went away, thus locking the rear and shocking the trans and splitting the case lengthwise. I found a GS455 a guy was parting and got the 3.08 open out of it and had my recently rebuilt trans guts put into a new case. Now that I think of it, I wonder what happened to that GS455? I know that area is a strip mall, so it's not still there.

What away to start off college!

As far as another O, Darn goes, check out this slip, I'm T10 and it was the first round of elim's on double points night, last night (In my 1999 4x4 Ranger):

Man you are hard core and will run anything. I LIKE IT. Now that you bring up the O darn in the GS. I rembered That the night I snaped that drive shaft in half I split the right side of the bellhousing clean through. I forgot all about that. I think the LESSON here is when putting good amounts of power to the ground any weak leank in the power terrain can cause damage to other costly components. THANKS FOR THE INPUT good luck.

    I'll pretty much race anything.

A couple of years ago I had an .000 light in that truck during elim's! Last night my RT's Were
    .024
    .031
    .059
    -.001

This year we got the LED lights in the tree. It's perfect staged shallow and going right when the last amber just lights. Too bad the ET's aren't as consistent:

    17.42
    17.40
    17.37
    17.29

  5. Years ago i had a 70 GS455 4 speed , i had rebuilt the engine with a variety of go fast goodies and had taken it to the track for bop day. i didnt know how to launch a 4 speed and kept dumping the clutch and getting a bog out of the hole. first round of eliminations come up and i decide that i'm going to do a pro stock style launch and that should take care of the bog issue. i bring the rpms up to about 4000 rpm and when the last yellow light comes on i dump the clutch i hear a loud BANG and the car doesnt move one single inch. had the car towed home and pulled the differential cover off expecting to find a grenaded rear end. turned out that it shear an axle off right where the splines end and it looked as if it was cut with a knife. the other axle had the splines twisted like a barber pole. i never did find out how fast that car would go. but it ran 13.0 with a 2.8 60' the day i broke it. 7. 69GS400s

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

drive ~ 250 miles to Cecil Cty from Long Island NY in my '69 GS Conv. During tech they told me "You KNOW you cant go quicker than 14 sec in a COnvert. without a bar....right ??" Yeah...whatever

Bolt on the slicks and crack the balancer through the keyway - got out half track because of all the noise.....limp back to the hotel

....Buick Buddy brings another balancer from home to the track the next morning, do the install, back in the staging lanes.....Do the burnout and it feels "Funny" coming out to the lights.

Stage, go to launch and the car just sits there and does a 6K rev. Hmmm.....it IS in drive.... ???? Reverse....Crunch crunch crunch

Ate the spyder gears. Had to leave the car in Md. for another buick bud to install a pegleg rear just so I could drive it home 2 weeks later.

Never did get the BOOT for going faster than 14 that weekend

Moral ?? I was gonna say, dont race your ride home, but after driving 450+ miles to the BPG Nats I even broke my own rule :Dou: but not the car......this time

    BP_Motorworks Ragtop Racer

I have told this before, but I will tell it again.

Here is a story about a tune with and without the mufflers. My buddy had a perfect nitrous tune with his mufflers on. (The best I have ever seen for a plate system) Flowmaster 3 inch 2 chamber. He took the mufflers off and picked up 1/2 a second on the motor. 7.70 from an 8.20 (1/8 mile) We all told him he was going to munch a plug next time he put the juice to it. His answer was "Naw, it will be fine" Well, next pass he put the spray on and sure enough, it backfired through the carb, blew of his rubber fuel line to the carb (which he was told to change many times), caught on fire, and had the biggest weenie roast in Wichita Raceway Park history. His fiberglass hood looked like scrambled eggs, and the car got so hot, is cracked the front glass. This just happened about 3 weeks ago.

By the way, there was only some electrode on #1 and no electrode on #2.

Well boys and girls, what did we learn today in N20 ed ??? If your car picks up tremendously without the mufflers on the motor, you better rejet the nitrous.
