Hello...newly subscribed and would like to know where to look on the block of my 72 GS-350 to verify it is a matching numbers car. Would like to post pictures but I do not have any photos smaller than 150X150 pixels.
    Thanks for any help.

  2. Check on the driver side block surface in between #1 and #3 spark plugs, or on the front of the block, on the vertical surface, on the driver side. You should find serial #'s and engine production codes between those 2 locations.

You can post pictures much larger than 150 x 150 pixels, that's just the maximum for an avatar pic file. The size limit for posting in a thread is 153k I believe. A good size for posting in a thread is around 500 x 500 pixels or so.

Thanks Dave...how about location of letters/letter on rear end to know if it is a 3:08, 3:42, etc.

A picture is worth a thousand words -

I have no idea why this isn't showing -

I believe the axle codes are stamped on the passenger side on top, a couple inches in from the center.

Please remember this stuff was stamped by people and some things aren't always in the proper places (if they're there at all).

  5. Typically the axle code is found on the passenger side axle tube, but my car has it on the driver side. You may have to really scrub/wire brush the tube in order to see it, if tube is grimy/dirty. Should be maybe 6-12 inches from the pumpkin.

I doubt you'll find it on the deck surface

I would expect it to be on the FRONT FACE of the engine, on either the drivers side, or pass side, just below the head surface (and perpendicular to that surface). They STOPPED putting the vin on the 455's block deck after 70, and I don't think they EVER stamped 350 vins there. Send me your email address, and I'll send you a pict (it's too big & I can't resize it).:Brow:

  7. Dan, I mentioned the block surface between the plugs because he's likely to find his engine code there. May as well have the serial # and the engine code, as long as he's trying to identify the engine.

    Pictures can be found HERE

Engine code should be WB if correct engine, along with the serial # matching your VIN.

Picked up a wire brush this afternoon and will be doing some investigating this weekend. Did a little last night and what I found was a horizontal (not perpendicular) ID number on the front deck of the engine driver's side (just below the powersteering bracket) that starts 4O and ends in a differant number than my V.I.N.
There are'nt any ID #'s or a flat surface for that matter to stamp between #1 & #3 cylinder due to it's bowl shape between the plugs.
Where the hell did this engine come from?
More numbers coming and will try to take a photo if possible.
    Thanks Again,

    Todd

  9. Todd, the 4 indicates Buick motor division, the zero indicates 1970 model year. The surface between the plugs that you need to look at is about an inch lower than the level of the plugs, down on the block surface, not on the heads. I can take a digital photo of mine.

  10. It will be on that small surface you see just above the exhaust manifold, between the plugs.

    Todd -

On top of the bell housing, where the motor meets the transmission, is the casting for the motor. You can see it if you look down when your head is in the engine compartment. What is the number?

Or, for that matter, post any casting/stamping numbers you may see (intake manifold, carb, dist, etc...)

We'll help you get to the bottom of this.

    Hey guys...sorry for the delay.
Between #1 & #3 spark plug, stamped into the block, looks like S0 177 and is spread that far apart (I can send a photo if anyone would like).
On the front block surface (just below the power steering pump) on the driver's side is stamped horizontal 40K116265
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Todd

The numbers on the Intake manifold are B-1245060

The numbers on the bell housing where the engine meets the trans. is 1382201

    Todd

  14. 1382201 is a 1970 350 block. Not sure about the intake #. The letter K in the serial # indicates built in the Kansas City MO plant. The rest of the serial # would match the original car's VIN. The SO engine code indicates a 1970 2 barrel 350 engine, so it isn't a GS engine originally.

    Ok, the intake # is from a 1974 350 4 barrel.

Dave...how restrictive is this manifold and what heads would fit w/a 1970 block and a 1974 intake?
Was everything that interchangeable between '70' - '74'?
I would like to change the valve cover gaskets this weekend where should I look under the valve covers to verify what heads sit on top of this block sandwiching that manifold.

  16. Sorry, someone else will have to address those issues.

The casting # will be on the top side of the heads, under the cover. My heads are 1972's on a 71 block, and 72 intake. The 1972 heads have a 72 cast into the head just to the left of the #1 plug on driver side, and left of #8 plug on passenger side. I don't know if any other year heads also had the 2 digit year cast into them.

    Paint & Trim Codes

Got my Sloans documentation today. The trim code is 367 and color code is MM1. Anyone know where I can track these codes down?
What does Ignition XXXX and Trunk XXXX mean?

    Thanks -Todd

    Todd,

I took the liberty of "X'ing" out those ignition and trunk key codes...with those codes, anybody can make a key and unlock/start your car. Hope you don't mind.

Interior trim code 367 is a GS bucket seat interior in Tan/Black color combo. It was a tan (brown the way it looks to me, or even saddle color) with black accessories (dash, steering wheel/column, console, etc.)

Paint code "M" is Burnished Copper.

I looked up the above info in my 1972 Color and Trim catalog.
