Not the BEST way to start the day...

  1. Record low this morning for this date in Fargo: -35deg :eek2: , fortunately no wind though.

Van and pickup both started ok( remote starters :) ,) I have a block heater in the 89 F150. We were scheduled to drop off the van at 7am to have a block heater installed in it too. I have a single wide driveway, and the truck is parked behind the van. I put the key in the truck ignition, turn it, and something gives way in the ignition cylinder! So, I can't turn the steering wheel, and can't take it out of park.:af: Which of course means I have 2 vehicles I can't use this morning, since the van is blocked in. Call a taxi, deliver daughter to school, wife to work, me to work, about $20 later... Tow truck for the F150 has about 30 calls ahead of mine, so I don't know when they'll get to it. Lucky for me, there's probably an extra company vehicle here that I can borrow at noon to pick up my girl, who has just a half day at school today. And if the F150 has been towed by then, I can pick up my wife and bring her home to get the van.

    TGIF??? :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank:

  2. BTW, by the time the taxi got me to work, his car thermometer showed -38deg.... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sounds like an excellent reason for a heated garage.

All signs point to taking the day off. Days only gets worse when they start out badly.

It's never good to start out the day like that, but on a light note - it's nice to see someone with my kind of luck:) I swear I have this cloud of doom hanging over my head.

I'd be walking to the heated garage and turning on the stereo.

I hate days that start out like that , they always seem soooo much longer .

Hope it gets better Dave ! :eek2: :TU:

  8. Yeah, I wish I could just take the day off... it's month-end though, so I've got work that can't be put off. I just talked to the shop again, and they should be able to get the truck hauled in this morning for sure. I'm borrowing a 2004 Jeep Liberty to do my running around at noon, and I should have the truck by the end of the day, I hope. Heated garage? Sorry, there's only room for my 68 in there, so that's no help. MOVING will help. 'Bout a year from now, we can start looking to move to a newer place. Minimum 2-car heated garage, preferably 3, but not likely.

This winter is turning out to be one of the nastier ones that we've had for a number of years. Christmas day was up to 32F but its been pretty much all downhill since then. Wednesday was a new record here. -45F plus the wind which made it -75F. A minesite 250 miles north of here was the coldest place in the WORLD at -63F without the wind. Today warmed up to a balmy -6F but then the wind came up to make it feel like -49F. Then it started snowing and right now I can barely see the house across the street.

Looks like I'll be spending some quality time with the snowblower for the next couple of days. :bglasses:

Oh, and if you need a tow truck? Minimum 14 hour wait is what people are being told.

Unfortunately we've been spoiled the last number of years by winters with above normal temperatures and very little snow. What we're having now used to be a normal winter here.

    :ball:

The scary part of all this here is that life still goes on. People go to work, schools don't close, you do your shopping, go out to restaurants, entertainment events etc. The band Nickleback is in town tonight playing to a sold out crowd of 13,000 and nobody is planning on staying home because of the weather.

I like to complain about the weather as much as the next guy but I refuse to let it run my life..................

and the mosquitoes aren't bad at all right now.

  11. The wait for a tow truck wasn't too bad, they came to the house at noon while I was here with a company Jeep to take care of my Lab. I called them at 5 and they had taken the ignition apart already, and as suspected the pot metal piece that is the weak link in the ign. assy had broken. $10-$15 part, I hate to hear the total with labor and towing when I go get it tomorrow...

On the brighter side, I took my 5yr old daughter to play PTA bingo at her school tonight, and we won a 3' tall Squidward :) and a purple turtle!

Hey David this is Ed in Bottineau. So you finally got some of the cold huh. Its about time. We had 45 below a couple mornings ago so your temps aren't to bad. Had a flat on the wifes car that morning so we are about even with luck. Hang in there because spring is only3 months away. ED K

I've always envied you guys out southwest. After reading this thread, I know it's pretty darn cold out here in boring Buffalo, but now I know it can get a whole lot worse.

You guys made me feel a lot better!:)

Hit -22 w/windchill here (and it is *windy* here) last night. Last year my regal was stuck to the ground because of a sudden change in temp (got above 32*, snow melted, dropped that nite, tires froze to the ground) took a 4x4 and a big chain to unstick it. This year, my little summit was stuck in the same spot, couldn't even rock it because the garage was 1/2 a foot in front of it and no 4x4 for 8 hours. A few trips with gallon jugs full of hot water got me out tho.

and to think that I was just grumbling today because it only got up to 45

Guess I should consider myself lucky, although, we do have snow forcasted for tomorrow and into next week... anything below 40 to us southern guys is darn cold, I cannot imagine anything below 0.

Gotta rub it in, don't ya!

  20. Well, I did get my truck back at noon today. A nice side benefit to this repair, is that my tilt now funtions like new :) and the ignition cylinder turns smooth and easy. Neither of which was the case since the day I bought the truck 3 years ago. The ignition turned normally until temps dropped below 20 or so. I lubed it up good with graphite this fall, but it didn't make any diff when winter came. Total bill including the tow was about 200.
