well, this is interesting: there is .030 between the rods on the crank.......

so the noise is probably the rods slamming into one another along the crank journal.......

    anyone concur ??

It didn't ingest something like just happened to Larry's LS6 did it? It sounds doubtfull as the motor has been apart but Larry's noise was LOUD and the bell housing acted like an echo chamber confusing us for a short while that it may be a converter.

    Good luck.

YUP, neighbor had that in his 396 in the 40 Chev also. I think it only applies to the early blocks and was instructions that came with the cam. We found an NC machine shop locally who did it for nothing.

Car was done and together when he noticed the noise. What a pain working in that engine compartment. Fortunately the engine side panels come off.

Paul, you have accurately described the same problem I had with my hemi last summer. It turned out to be a lifter bore that was starting to wallow out. The car actually made one real good pass before I put it back on the trailer. Good luck with it.

Ok well after a 5 hour thrash and some ingenious barganing I will be showing up at martin with my car. 427 4 speed. Got it all installed and test drove at about 1:00am needs a cleaning badly and I have a few things to tend too before I can slam it on the trailer. Don`t ask but I have HUGE thanks to my neighbor and friend Rich Barron I aquirred the short block and he and his guys transferred all the hard parts and got it to the car so I could thrash. He even stayed and helped me crank the bolts and drop it in seemed he wanted to be sure that one did not rattle and knock... Thing runs really good and I can be sure the upper end as in heads lifters, push rods, rockers are not making the noise... Had to take a loan out to get a decent short block I am just tired of talking about my broke motor at the event time to talk about the car while it is there. looking forward to having a good time ..
