a friend of mine built a 302 motor for his short box f150. Dusring break in the stock distibutor gear rounded off. he switced to a msd billet distributor, put 600? miles or so on it and the msd gear rounded off. the motor is pretty mild, he does run a high volume oil pump. if anyone has ran into this or knows someone that might have that i can talk to it would be most appreciated. thanks Dustin
The oil weight is probably his problem. is it 10-30? if not it should be. If so he has way to much pressure.
I know nothing about the Ford engine, but just double-check that he is using a steel gear and not bronze. -Bob Cunningham
If he ruined one distributor gear, you can bet the gear on the cam is shot, too. So yeah, he's going to keep eating distributor gears until he changes cams. Any chance he has a roller cam and used a non-roller-compatable gear? I know GM uses a special gear on the roller-cam engines, and suspect Ford does the same. Use a new cam and new distributor gear together. Should end the problem unless there's other issues like excessive oil pressure.
Watch the roller fords, the cams require a special dist gear. Me thinks the roller ford cams require a bronze gear. Easier to replace a gear than a cam...
oil wieght is 10-30 he has 80psi warm the first gear was steel the second is MSD #85832 iron gear the cam is an edelbrock hydraulic non roller he bought the performer package with intake, cam, lifters, a valve train hardware I am not sure about the oil slinger Thanks for the help on this Dustin
