God bless it, it ripped the entire back end off without stopping. If the impact point was closer to him, he would have been a goner.

...let's see. "I had right-of-way, train didn't stop," or maybe "train was speeding and I couldn't get out of its way in time," or "I've been over this crossing lots of times and never saw a train before"...

And from the “looking forward” view, the train was on HIS SIDE of the van

There are other news stories and videos on this incident. I think he is def in his left ear, no lights/warnings at that crossing, road parallels tracks until the hard left and train was going 80MPH. This husband and father is lucky to be alive. That intersection needs a safety "tune-up".

CBS showed that clip on the news this AM. The anchors seemed to think that he or Amazon might sue the railroad for not having gates or lights at the crossing. Good luck with that! It is and has been my position that anyone who would intentionally stop on railroad tracks is too stupid to have a driver's license. There are over 200,000 railroad grade crossings in the United States. It would be financially impossible for the railroads to build and maintain automatic gates and signal lights on all of them. They guard the ones that have a lot of car and truck activity. In this case, I think Amazon should send the driver a bill. If he's not fired, Amazon is stupid.

    I agree.
The driver should thank God for being alive.
He should be fired, regardless of his handicap.
He is well aware of his handicap, he should compensate for it, which he did not.
The railroad IS NOT at fault, nor is Amazon.
The driver is said to be deaf in his left ear, but HE IS NOT BLIND:rolleyes:
Another example of a stupid human!
If he blames his handicap of deafness, then he should be stripped of his driving privileges, he’s an unsafe driver!!

I’ll add that this guy should be on his knees thanking whoever he has faith in that HE is alive and NO ONE ELSE WAS HURT!
This incident should be an eye opener to him, period!

I re-watched the video a couple times. He does glance to the left before starting the turn. As he is turning, from his side window you can see the train coming. I'm assuming he saw the train coming but thought he could make it. But he massively misjudged it's speed. It did look a little far away but obviously it was hauling butt as he was hit seconds later.

I think the mistake he made was not pausing to assess how fast the train was going. I'm guessing he saw it out of the corner of his eye and thought he had plenty of time.

In aviation we say that odds of 999 out of 1,000 in your favor, are lousy odds. The same is true of grade crossings.

Was that a gateless crossing? Even if it was, no lights? He might be deaf but he has eyes?

I'm a bit surprised at the harsh comments. The guy obviously made a mistake and lived to tell about it. He has a family to take care of. Nobody has ever made a mistake while driving? Maybe we should get some of the millions of illegals that crossed over in the past 3+ years to take Amazon delivery jobs near gateless crossings...
