is there anyone out there that knows of a reputable shop that knows how to build a BBB in northern cali (san francisco bay area)? all the shops i ever hear of are always on the central/eastern US. i would rather not have to ship my block anywhere and i would like someone who has dealt with buick motors before. any help would be appreciated. thank you.

California is full of Knowledgeable Craftsmen. If you accumulate the info, specific to the Buick engine, and present it to a local shop, of good repute, you should have no problems.

It is not necessary that machinist's be in love with a particular brand in order to perform their jobs. I would even agrue that specialty builders recieve, sometimes, excessive compensation for tasks that any good shop can handle, if given proper information.

I've used a machine shop in Alemeda for several years. I've built two Buick engines & a # of "other" engines through him. He has all the equipment, bored both blocks, cut the heads for the spring retainers & did the 3/5 angle valve jobs. He's been in business for 20 some years. Emo's - Engine Machining & Overhauling on Everett street in Alemeda. Good luck, Ken

If you spec out the job based on what you learn here performance shops will build your engine just fine. About the only trouble you might have is finding a shop with a torque plate for loading the block before bore and hone. I couldn't so my cylinders are probably not perfectly round. It's a crapshoot man!

I personally really don't trust others with final assembly so I do it myself after the machine work. That way I can confirm tolerances and cleanliness.

I live in vallejo too. I have been in search for a good mahine shop as well. I took my heads to FM machine in Vallejo to have them tanked and magnafluxed. They seem real cool.
