Noise from lifters after rebuild buick 455

I agree to get the springs fixed up first. Is there a chance the inner spring is binding up and causing the noise? How did they get any kind of valve seal in there if the guide isn't machined down unless they only did the seal area and not the spring seat. Please take some pictures of the valve spring area once you get one off.

As a quick way to remedy the problem if the seat is not cut you can always remove the inner spring to try it out. It wouldn't matter if the pad is cut for just the outer. I do that all the time to break in a cam with stiff springs. The engine would still rev to 5000 before valve float anyway, depending on cam. If the noise goes away and oil starts flooding out you've found your problem. If the inner springs are actually binding then maybe they are causing some sort of havoc inside the lifter piston in a running, dynamic situation causing the flow to be cut off to the pushrods. You never know.

Torsdalen, you still haven't answered the question of whether or not the amount of oil bleeding from the lifters, with no pushrods, looks anything like the lifters that were in the earlier videos when you prime the engine with a drill. If the flow looks similar then the springs may be the trouble. If not then your up top oiling problems will still be there. You also said earlier that after a few minutes oil finally comes out of the rockers but how much? If it is not shooting out at least a few of those rockers causing a mess then I'd say you don't have enough flow for a real street motor to keep everything lubed and cool up top. Any engine I've run for more than a few minutes without valve covers has to be shut down. Even if it takes 2 minutes for oil to finally come out of the rockers after startup it should come out in a pretty large volume.

Mike, the guide is cut down for the seal but the pad looks stock. I have seen guys run the inner spring on top of the pads before and get away with it but these are a 1107 and the inner is tight on the outer. I disagree that he should start doing a bunch of things before I help him get a new single with a damper set to the correct installed height and then I want him to lash it correctly because I think the preload was not right also. I rather the preload be on the high side then the low, that lifter can run with .200 preload if you like without a problem. And then with the method he was used might not of been correct on top of that. That said I am not ruling out a lifter problem but it is highly unlikely, we need to fix what we know is wrong and set the preload correctly and then if there is a problem I will help him through to the next step.

We have to remember where he is, there most likely is a bit of language/terminology problem. Then you get 2 or 3 pages of people trying to diagnose the problem over the net from half way around the world on top of that he might be a little overwhelmed.

I am dyno'ing tomorrow, after that is out of the way I will help you get through this. And don't worry we will be able to get you fixed up :TU:

Thanks for responding Mike. I am not sure if the video i posted would be right because the oil is 20w50 and Cold, and the lifters are not rotating like it would on a running engine. The rocker shafts and arms was off the engine when i shoot the video. I know for sure that the lower parts of the valve guide are not machined to fit the inner springs. I assembled the heads my self and was stupid to not notice this problem. I can confirm that all the pushrods got oil to the top (rockers) but i was not sure if this was enough oil to lubricate the rockers an valves. The oiling may not be a problem witc correct preload and corect spring, time will show. Hope to set correct preload this weekend. When i get the tool for valve springs i wil try to use stg1 springs that i already have in my garage. Not many Buick guys here in Norway, so i am happy for getting response here on this board. Here is a video from idling engine, there are oil to all the rockers, but you cah hear the sew machine noise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuHiEVb9nAg Thanks !

comp pro mugnum lifters are great. just put them in my 455 that has a comp cam with a fast ramp and they are much quieter than the delphis that were in it. there is a seperate part # for buick 350's and 455's, not a chevy lifter.
