Hey all... Here's my question/problem.. Hope someone can figure it out as I'm at a loss..

When I'm on it, or anytime the tach hits around 4k and higher (tho I let up first) I get a horrid whinning noise. It honestly sounds like a belt slipping but I don't see how as I just replaced them with new Gates Pro XXL last week. The problem started when I did the ignition upgrade. Limitor is set at 5k btw. Also I should mention the car is A/C but I've yet to reinstall the brackets and a/c belt. Could that be it?

I thought maybe the carb, so I swaped out a quicky rebuild last night (which leads to another Q) and the same thing still happens.

A side question regarding the carb I removed. When I pulled it, gas ran out a bit when I undid the lines, then I tilted the thing forward to empty some more. When I poped the top off, the thing was still FULL of gas. What could cause that bad of flooding?

some side info that may help.. When I did the ignition upgrade, I had to replace the alternator and bat connectors as well.

So fellas.. Anyone have some ideas on the noise? :(

There's a lot of gas in a Q-Jet, and you have to tip it upside down to empty it out - the only gas that comes out of the front of the carb is what is in the filter housing, not what's in the fuel bowl.

Check everything that is driven by the belts - alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, power steering pump, smog pump, whatever. Look for worn out bearings or frozen impellers. also check your belt tension, and how sure are you that you put the correct length belts on? The parts books at NAPA etc. are not always right. Check old belts against new whenever possible.

    my bet: alternator

Some one very wise (Weise) on this board said put it back from what you changed before you had a problem...

You changed the alt? Take the belt off and run the car to 4K (it will work on just the battery) and see if the noise stops....

    alt belt

    alts and their belts...

I had a very weird (wheiling - grinding - what the hell is that noise) once.

I had a buddy with a jack handle pulling the alt tight.....
Since we put so much pressure on it, I thought no way could that be it.

    but the noise continued

Then out of curiosity we changed belts, and tightened the belt once more....the noise stopped...

Not sure why, but the noise was gone.

    Just my experiance.

Since last night I foundout the rev limiter isn't even enabled (12v to where? :puzzled: )

I'll ditch the alt belt and test.. That's the only thing that would make sense I think. Yes, I did buy the cheapy one at AutoZone.. Maybe I got a dud, or worse off just a hunk of pos.

The belts that came off were the exact same belts that went on. Numbers and all.. The size was a tad off, but I contribute that to age and stretching.

John, regarding the Q-Jet, yep, there's a bit of gas in them and I can believe what runs out when you loosen the fuel lines. BUT, I was tilting the carb and it was running/pouring out of the front gasket area as well as the accellerator pump hole. Then when I finally poped the top, the fuel bowl was still full a tad beyond where the float should have stopped it.

Well, I'm off to try this alternator gig.. If not, I'll probably just beat it with a 20lb sledge.. :blast:

    Thanks guys!
