Hi Just put a new old gearbox in my ride. It worked when it last was used. Nothing happens when I try to shift gears and it seems like it's not picking up any oil. I put about 3,5qarts in the pan and after idling in 5 mins its still on full on the dipstick? Can the pump get stupid if not beeing used?
You should have dropped the pan and put a new filter in it before filling it with fluid. For all you know, there might not even be a filter there, or the pickup became dislodged. Take the pan down and have a look.
New filter was installed when I mounted the box. Even dropped the pan agein today to see if it was anything wrong and after my opninion it looked ok, but Im not a transmisson tech do... But I did forget to fill oil in te converter before installing. I read somewhere that it should not be a big problem..?
You don't have to fill the converter, but you should put a quart or two in before you mount it. Did you have any problems mounting the converter? Are you sure it is fully seated? Are you absolutely sure that you fully seated the pick up tube into the valve body with the supplied O ring? It can take quite a bit of effort sometimes. I'm just suggesting things because you haven't really told us all you did.
Whenever its shut off is te fluid overfill then whenever you start it, does the fluid drop some? Really need to do a pressure test on it. Does it whine from the front of the trans. And has someone previously rebuilt it
I hate to be the one who suggests something so simple and obvious, but you did bolt the converter to the flexplate, right? Sorry, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence but you just never know, we have all done things like this.
That was going to be my next question. Yeah it's kind of a problem because you're waiting for the sytem to fill the converter. A newly installed tranny with an empty converter will not shift into gear properly when commanded to. It will take a while and then you have to check fluid level again and again till it's stable and filled.
It takes 3 gallons to fill an empty TH400, though you are only making up losses. I'd check the pressure at the test port & see if it tracks the shift position & rpm. If yes, i'd guess you've lost the large dia seal on a clutch pack piston. If the trans is original, its WAYYYYYY overdue for all new seals. A soft kit is only $30 if the hard parts are good, your free labor. Some of the rubber seals I take out are so hard, they break when bent. Next step up is seals & clutches, and I do the torrington bearings. I just about never put in new steels, they never include a proper wavy plate. Bruce Roe
Did you seat the converter correctly? I made that mistake once... I didnt know the procedure to seat the converter. Bolted it all together and drove for less than a mile... then .. nothing... Just like neutral. Apparently I broke the pump by not seating the converter correctly.
Now I got it running, I tried to overfill it as much as it was oil over the pump ca 7,5 quarts and then started it and put in gear and then the wheels started moving (over the ground) . But it slips in 3d when I let of the gas pedal while driving and then smacks in again when I give enough throttle again. It's also "slippy" to move in reverse? Maybe a vacuum problem??
I would continue to run it with the wheels off the ground. Put it into each forward gear, 1-2-3-N-R-P. It can take a bit to get all the air out of the transmission and get it full.
It seems as I gat to low oil preassure now, it slips in 3rd hven I let of the throtle in about 45mph and its also slow in reverse. If the car has been standing for 30min When I start up the car ind put in D-2-1 it takes about 6-10 sec. befor it goes into gear. Can the pump might be "burned" after my startup problems? Is it an easy job to switch the pump from my old box?
sounds like a direct clutch problem to me. whether it be burnt or what. someone may have took the sealing ring off the center support and not plugged to hole in the case. that would cause low pressure in 3rd and reverse. or the sealing ring itself leaking or the lip seal. pull the valve body and air up the hole next to the center support bolt on the right and left and see if its leaking air internal the trans. if it is pull the direct clutch hub out and reseal it and replace the directs if worn and reseal the center support and dual feed the directs. if its not leaking it might have a pump issue or valvebody cross leak which will show up in a preliminary pressure test. if its only low in reverse and 3rd you have confirmed direct clutch issues.
It also uses time to get "in gear" after a start up the car after standing in about 20-30 min. I know the case was working fine when it was parked for a little over a year a go. But as I said earlyer ; I had some start issues with it and I thing it ran dry for about 5 min (or more) before I got it to pick up oil :/
