I went to start my car up it finally got nice in NE Ohio to go to the track on Friday.
I always crank the motor till I get oil pressure then pump the carb and fire it up.
This takes about 10 second or so but today I cranked and cranked and no oil
pressure. After about 30 seconds or so I still had no pressure uh oh I think
I have a problem. I seen the article on the oil filters and I was using
the Fram oil filter but I always used the Racing filter from Summit Racing.
The HP 2 filter was the one I was using. Well after reading the article on
the filters I decided to use a different one. I tried a K&N filter HP 2003
was the number on it. OK well I thought maybe the anti-drain back did not work
on the filter. After all the car has not started for a month. Maybe I needed
to re prime the motor. So I pulled the Distributor out and got my drill out
to prime. What happened then was I started to get the prime then I got a
air pocket it started again then totally lost all prime. The drill just spun
freely. I Forgot to say that I did drive all the way to Norwalk and back a month
earlyer and did not notice any problem with oil pressure with the
new filter my oil was Red Line 10-40. Oil pressure is 55 psi @3000 rpm.
Well I thought maybe a gear broke so I started to take the filter out and
noticed that oil was coming out so I thought that it must be something
broken since it looks like I still have oil there to prime. Well i got the
gears out and every thing looked fine. So I pack the gears with Vasoline and
try again still can' get no prime.
Now my question is since the gears look good and the plate is ok the gears must be ok Correct? This is a new TA front cover with adj. oil pressure relief.
( 10 years old now) This pump is the one with largers gears in it also.
I also have a deep sump oil pan with a larger pickup. Could the pickup have
come loose at the motor? The guy that built the motor put a strap from the
pickup to the block using the old windage tray hole to bolt it on so this would not happen and fall off. Could it be that I did not get enough vasoline in there, I thought that I packed it pretty good as I have done this before.
My next step is to pull the pan down and see if I can look at the pickup
for atachment. The real B#$%* is that there are studs on the oil pan now and it also is bigger now 7 qt. The old Pan I could get out if I jack the motor high enough but I dont know about this one. Could the real problem be that since the oil pan does stik down below the frame about 1-2 inches, this itiot that rebuilt my rear end at a trans shop hit my oil pan with something, The Lift a Curb I don't know this put about a 1/2 inch dent in the pan. This happened about 5-6 years ago maybe it just now came loose.
Iwould like to know if the gears are not broke they should work correct?
I should head to the pickup for the problem or should I look at another area also?
Thanks for your help as this is a GREAT Web Site. Good job on this.
Again thank you for your time in reading this long thing. Guy
    :(

Sounds like it's out of oil:laugh: Couldn't be, probably is a problem with the pickup.

    oil pressure problems

Guy, I think your on the right track. I think by you post you have a crack in the feed tube or a restiction at the pick up. I know its not fun but the oil pan needs to come out. Keep me posted. AL

Al - do you think that I have to pull the motor to get the oil pan out. I just
don't if I can get the pan past every thing since it is not the stock pan
and I also have studs on it. I can see now that this is going to be a real....

    oil pressure problems

Guy, if its a rear sump and after the engine is raise and the pan is lowered, if you can get the the to the 2 attaching bolts that hold the tube on I can't see much of a problem. AL

Al - Thanks for that little tip there. I never thought of that. I might be able
to get the pickup out without taking the pan out all the way unless the
pickup can't get past the oil pan and the motor. This is a square piece.
This is still worth a try though as I might be able to see a hole in it or
    see if it is damaged.
