Whenever you replace, or remove the timing chain cover, you lose the prime in the oil pump. What you need to do, is first remove the oil filter. Then remove the pump cover(6 small bolts) Then remove both oil pump gears. Pack the pump pocket full of vaseline. Then reinstall the gears. The gears will displace some of the vaseline. Remove the excess, and reassemble the pump cover, and put another oil filter on. The vaseline takes up all the air space around the gears, and the pump will now prime when you start the motor. The vaseline will dissolve into the motor oil, and cause no harm. Do not use chassis grease for this.

I will go with what Larry says, the only thing I would add is to either prime by taking the distributer out and using a drill motor in the correct direction or removing all the spark plugs and turning the engine with the starter untill the pressure comes up.hope this helps, I hate mechanical mysteries.

you can try removing the distributor . While priming the pump blow air into the dip stick tube with an air compresser. Also adding an extra quart of oil helps getting the prime going.
