Anyone as mad about this as me? I love that stuff. It's being replaced with 7900S which is 3 to 1. That ratio throws my shelvs off. (too much of this, not enough of that) And it seems to perform the same as the 7500S. I've used both and just don't like the mix ratio of the 7900.

i run a dupont paint store, i have to agree with you. plus try telling someone that you have to buy 2 quarts of activator to do a gallon of clear and you gonna have a bunch left over. :Dou: not one of duponts smarter ideas. ive had a few guys mix it 4-1 and get away with it, just doesnt dry as fast.dan

We use R-M in our shop, and they have used the 3:1 mix ratio on a few of their clears since the early 90's. It's really not that big of a deal, in fact we also use other brands of primer and clear which mix 4:1. I have done it for so long I just automatically mix the varying products not really thinking about it as it just becomes second nature.
The bad thing about DuPont is they are coming out with a new product every time you turn around and can't leave anything alone.
R-M and Glasurit rarely discontinue something and don't keep changing the makeup of their products. An example is their chromated epoxy and
acid etch primers are still available, where most of the others discontinued chromated products years ago.

It's not a huge deal, or even a deal at all for a big shop, but I'm a one man show. Sometimes I can't use the activator fast enough before the shelf life. I'm just a simple guy. I like running out of a system all at one time. Not gonna chance mixing it 4/1. I'll just have to deal with it. Probably get the 7975 in pints rather than quarts. I've tried a few other brands. Many are good. Shewin williams is good, but smells horrible, Had good results with PPG too, but back when I tried PPG the guy mixing the color wasn't worth a hoot. Tried Transtar hoping to save a little money, but it don't hold out. Everything I've done in Transtar died back. Everything! Just most familiar with Dupont so I'll stick to that.

I can understand not being able to use up the activator once it's opened in a safe time frame. I know PPG recommends a one week shelf life once opened, which is just not enough.
Our R-M jobber let's us buy 4 individual quarts of hardener for the gallon price so we can keep it pretty fresh that way. But it's used for clear, single stage, and in a few of the primers so that helps.
We have our own mixing set-up for b/c and single stage so that helps eliminate those problems encountered with trusting somebody. But it does get expensive keeping a stir bank going.
