Ok, here is my first actual upgrade. I decided to remove the old stock air cleaner with the vestigial snorkel that sticks off the side and replace it with an Edelbrock 14" 360 degree cleaner and element. I ordered the K&N filter as it has a lifetime 1,000,000 mile warranty and will soon replace the edelbrock filter. Attached are some pics of the upgrade. Too bad the rest of the stuff isn't chrome  maybe when and if I get the edelbrock B4B intake and maybe get some new valve covers it will make it look much better.

    Vacuum Pump?

Here is a picture of the vacuum pump I think...? It is located near the front driver's side horns. I'm sure it is ok to cap this valve off as it only had a hose running from the old air cleaner to this piece. Or should I leave the cap off? Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Nick

The vacuum pump is the alternator-looking thing next to the power steering pump. It has a belt and pulley....it's silver in color.

    Nick,

That's the Fuel vapor canister. the hose that you left connected goes to the gas tank. The hose you capped off went into the air cleaner snorkle. I don't think it's a good idea to leave that capped up.....

Anyone know what to do with that canister (other than remove it) ?

    Put hose back on?

So should I uncap it? Would uncapping it cause any engine contaminatino problems? I'm sure I can drill out one of the preset holes in the bottom of the edelbrock air cleaner and run my old hose back up to the bottom of it. The car runs fine with the thing capped up. Is it vestigial? What is everyone's recommendation?

    Thanks, Nick

The vapor cannister is/was supposed to collect gasoline vapors when you shut off the engine, then when you restarted later, the fumes would get sucked out of the cannister into the air cleaner and burned. It really won't help or hurt a thing mechanically if you hook it back up, leave it as is, or disconnect it totally and take it out.

Mine went away years ago, I plugged the hose to the fuel tank, and the bracket makes a nice holder for oil cans.

Then again, if/when Big Brother starts checking closely, I may need to find one to put back in there...

Take it out. The cannister's charcoal is almost certainly fried by now and you can't get replacements. Be sure to cap the fuel lines.
