I've been a lurker for a while and finally decided to register and do my intro. My name is Phil and live in Arlington Texas. I have mostly dealt with Chevy motors. I hav'nt been around Buicks much other than growing up with them (cause they were dads favorite car) but never have worked on them much. I recently acquired a 430 from a 67 Wildcat and have been reading this board for information. There was a auto trans backing the motor but my plans are to put a 4 speed behind it. The motor also came with a aftermarket bellhousing set up for several different 4 speeds so I'm already that much closer. One of my questions is after searching for a flywheel, I have only found a couple of places selling them and they seem pretty pricey in the $265 range. These seemed to be more of a higher performance level of flywheel. I would be just happy with a standard factory flywheel. It seems there was a part # for an early 430(67-68) and a later(69-70). Is this info correct that they would have two different flywheel for the 430. I was also wondering if any flywheels from a Pontiac or Olds would cross over. Any help on suppliers for Buick parts would be greatly appreciated or if anyone has the stock flywheel #'s so I can keep my eyes open at the swap meets for one. At this point locateing a flywheel is my main objective so any help will be greatly appreciated. This motor will not be going in a Buick but in a 1930 Ford coupe.I think it will be a great looking motor in it.I'm not looking to do much with the motor other than keeping it stock cause I beleive it will have more power than I actually need in such a light car. This is a great board and there seems to be lots of info here.I am looking forward to reading the board.
Hi Phil - welcome from a fellow Wagon lover Im no enjun Guru....but I cant see why a '67 430 flywheel would be any different than a 68-72 Big Block one - the castings and cranks are all pretty similar. You might be better served posting the question over on the Street/Strip 400-430-455 section The 430 is plenty strong....should make a sweet mill in your hotrod Definately post back as progress is made - we'd all love to see it Buick-specific vendors are Tri-shield performance (owners of this site) www.trishieldperf.com TA Performance www.taperformance.com PAE Enterprises (Jim Burek) http://www.paeenterprises.com/ They are the main suppliers / vendors for buick engine stuff
Thanks for the info 69GS400s.I'll post on in the section you said. TA performance shows one flywheel for the 400,430, and 455 for 67-70 I'll see if I can find the other link showing different #'s and see if anyone can see why they would have 2 different ones listed in their catalog.
