:pp Hi all, Dave here. I just got my 1969 Skylark Convertible on Saturday. Of course, I have a few questions for the vets of the forum. The car hasn't really been driven since 2005. The owner would start her every month and turn it around in the garage, but that's about it. The oil was only 6 months old, so I thought it was good enough to drive home with. On my 27 mile ride home, just over 1/2 way I started getting a sticky lifter. The oil light came on too and after I stopped and re-checked the level (fine) I restarted again. Got almost all the way home when teh oil light came on again. I ran some Mystery Oil in it for about 15 minutes, drained it and replaced oil & filter. Added more Mystery Oil, no more lifter problem (so far) but I'm not driving it again until I check out a few things. So here is the question, what should I start looking at, since the car has not been driven much? I just want to make sure she's a safe daily summer driver.

I should have the plate for it this week. :pp

Thanks and looking forward to learning a lot here and hopefully adding something to the forum as well.

For any oil pressure problems, the best thing to do is get a reliable oil pressure gauge on the engine to verify correct oil pressure. I seem to recall that 10 psi per 1000 rpm has been accepted as normal for Buick engines.

I expect that others will chime in with more info.:TU:

welcome to the board and post pictures when you can.

Oil pressure problem sounds like some sort of sludge or blockage, maybe in the filter. Hopefully your flush will clean it out and it will hold pressure. Somebody else will probably have a better idea.

Good luck Dave, she looks sweeeeeet. Ok heres where other guys will blast me. I have ran a 50/50 oil and kerosene mix through my motors to clean out the sludge. Don't drive on it, just run it through. I have heard this can damage gaskets but I have never had a problem.

the car looks great. pull a valve cover off to get an idea what the engine looks like inside. a quart of dextron atf with the oil change will help clean her out also. i will look for you in halifax on a friday cruise soon.

drop oil put in new oil/filter test oil pressure with gauge then you can change the oil pressure sending unit might be defected. also if your run ning the car in the summer only instead of 10w30 put a thicker oil in her watch the oil light. worse case might be bearings are going . always start with the easy stuff first

Thanks for the replies. I already ran some Mystery Oil in it. Replaced the oil & filter and added more MO. Also put some in the gas as well. I will be replacing the oil sender tonight. I plan to drop the oil pan and clean out the screen too soon. Here are some updated pictures. :TU:

how about pulling out the oil pressure relief valve to clean it up, could be varnished and sticking.

sure. it is behind the big bolt beside the filter on the filter housing. there is a gasket and it is spring loaded. i do have some extra springs if you wish to add some pressure. shoot me a pm. i could even give you a hand if needed.

Paul, I've changed the oil pressure sender. I took the car for a ride. No oil light, Until after about 20 minutes and even then, the light would flicker on-&-off. Shut car off and restart, no light again? I really want to drop the pan (it's leaking too) clean out the screen adn replace the gasket. I'll have a look at the oil pressure relief valve tonight. My leaking oil pan is getting worst, so no more driving it until I can drop the pan. I can't seem to find anyone selling replacement pans? I'd liek to replace it while I'm in there. Maybe even upgrade to a 5 quart pan?

    Nice looking car!

When I got mine it hadn't been driven much for the last 6 years. I did the jug of ATF and ran it for a little before the first oil change, also ran Marvel mystery oil in both the fuel system and the oil for a bit. I'm not saying that these things helped, they are just things that I like to do and so far, so good.

replacing the pan shouldn't be nessesary, it should hold 5 quarts w/ filter anyway. i would pop out that relief valve and clean it out, may solve it. it should only take about 10 min. to remove and install. that is where i would go first. the leak could also be the rear main seal. if that is the case i would try an additive to swell it up to get you by for the summer. i replaced one in my old buick 350 and that was a major pain in the ass, still leaked too.

please please please put an oil pressure gauge in your car ... or at least temporarily hook one up until your problem is diagnosed and cured.
