I already have 3 or 4 posts and I want to thank everyone for their responses. If you need an answer you go to someone that knows !!!!!!!!!!!! I'm helping a friend with his 71 GS(Stage 1 ?) 455 and don't really have much to work with except a good running 455( not sure of that either). The body inspection sheet found in the defroster vent says it should be a 4 speed(confirmed by rubber boot still in firewall for clutch rod) but a lot of the rest just doesn't match. The headlights don't work, wires running everywhere, lots of underbody rust,HEI added(which is OK) but different gauge wires spliced here and there and a 2004R trans that you can't drive over 50 MPH without it vibrating something terrible. He found a # matching Quadrajet(7041540) but I've seen a post elsewhere that has a different #. I've been hotrodding since 1963 and have a lot of wiring and electrical experience for 72 Cutlass,65,81,84 and 87 Elkys and aerocoupe. Maybe I can help someone here in the future. Thanks Rich
Rich, Welcome to the Best V8 Buick site you will find, Your friends 7041540 carb is from a 455, 71 Electra or Riviera, Unless he is fanatic about numbers it is the right one for that year engine [455]. The correct number for a 71 manual trans,455 would be #7041243 with no difference from a stage 1 or 455, #7041242 is correct for a 71 stage 1 w/auto.:TU: .Look around for awhile and try the Search Option for specific questions,There is a ton of info here for your research. PS where are you located? Hint ,fill in your personal profile better:TU:
I would take a close look at the driveshaft for the vibration. To be sure it does not still have one with the rubber slip joint in it. Those need to be retired and replaced.
Freed,Kenny,Jim...........Thanks for the welcome and info. The owner says the driveshaft looks like it spun free and slapped the bottom of the car a few times. He drives a OTR truck and doesn't have a computer. He's been buying a lot of parts from Poston and a man in Rockwall,Tx. Duane sent me an email saying that without a "build sheet" and Number matching Engine it would be hard to "authenticate" this car as a "Stage 1". All we have so far is the body inspection sheet.
