Hi Ya'll! Be nice to me....I am "FEMALE"! heh!

If I didn't post this in the right place sorry A) I am new and B) I am female.

    Ok here is the Q:

    1973 BUICK 455

I need to know the whole timing chain assembly on the above said motor.

God I hope I worded that correctly. Thinking and typing it out are two totally different things. <phew>

    Thanks in advance. ~Lindz

Do you have a chassis manual? It may get hairy if there's nobody there to walk you through it...

You basically have to pull the water pump and timing chain cover to get to the chain.....but there are lots of little obstacles to get that far, also.

No, No Chassis Manual. Just Chilton which says nothing.

I am building the motor from the ground up...I need to know how to install the timing chain because there is no adjustment for it. Therefore there are no adjustments to loosen or tighten. All I really need to know are the basics of installing the TC. Quick and simple.

Wow, does this make sense??? Argh!!!

Yeah like dropping the oil pan while the engine is still in the car, then the timing cover. Have you thought about getting a pro to do it? What makes you think it is the timing chain that is a problem if you do not already have the timing chain cover off?.

So all you need to know is how to slip the timing chain on...

Do you have a new set of gear with it? If so, it is easy. If not, then you need to pull one of the gears off so you can slip the chain over it and the slip the gear back on. Note the cam position.

    Is this helping?:Do No:

    You are helping wonderfully.

The crankshaft gear is on, both new...I just need to know how to put the camshaft gear on. How to bolt that up with the timing chain????? BTW ....it is a dual timing chain. Does this mean I have to take off the gear? That will be a bitch.

Where can I get a Chassis Manual? Store? Website? I have looked all over this godforsaken town for one.

    1) I don't need a pro..I have you guys now to help. I have come this far without help.
    2) I am building the engine. So therefore the timing chain cover is off. MEANING, working from the ground up.

    Let's see...more questions from me:grin:

Is the gear too tight to slip on? Or is the chain too short to get it on? How hard did the crank gear go on? Did you try to install the chain and gears all at once (as a set) so both cam and crank gear would go on at the same time? (did that make sense:gt: )

This is the only reason that these forums aren't quite perfect...you can't see what's going on:bglasses:

Q: Is the gear too tight to slip on? Or is the chain too short to get it on?
A: Good Question. It is possible the chain could be too short.
( The gear slipped on. But I am having trouble putting the camshaft gear on with the timing chain.)

Q: How hard did the crank gear go on?
A: It wasn't too HARD. It had to be tapped in though.

Q: Did you try to install the chain and gears all at once (as a set) so both cam and crank gear would go on at the same time?
A: This is what I was planning on doing but decided to see what my options are, if any. Hence why I am here.

    You make perfect sense :Comp:

    Lindsay,
I'm on the east side (22nd/ Kolb). Let me know when you are gonna work on it again. I have a 70 service manual, we can steal some of the info from it.

Check on ebay for service manuals, you can get one cheep.
At least I hope so. Look for the 1973 Buick Chassis Service Manual.

    Let me know.
    We'll get this thing going.

You make sound like you put both gears on, then tried slipping the chain over, I may be wrong. I do remember when Jim Weis was helping Yardley w/his 430, though. I'm pretty sure he first installed the cam gear, slipped the chain over the cam gear, then slipped the crank gear onto the chain and then installed the crank gear w/the chain hooked onto it. Make any sense?

Oh, ebay ebay ebay for a Chassis Manual. $30 tops should get one to your door.
