Hello everyone. I recently bought a running/driving 69 Buick Riviera GS with a 430 in her. I am new to Buicks, and classic cars in general. I am very excited to be here! The code on the Rochester is, "29241ME 1259", but is missing the "70" in the front. What does that mean? Decoding: Digit #1-2: Rochester Prefix (which is missing on the carb) Digit #3: the #2 indicates the decade, 1960's Digit #4: the #9 indicates the year of manufacture, 1969 Digit #5: the #2 indicates a Quadrajet 4-bbl Digit #6: the #4 indicates its for a Buick Digit #7: the #1 indicates this carb was for a manual, but the Riviera is an automatic I am a green-horn here so don't be too hard on me!
Welcome aboard! I've heard of the missing "70" before, and it seems to be a late 1960's thing. Not sure about the auto vs manual, but it wouldn't surprise me if the carb is still original to your new (old) Riv. The auto trans had no connection to the carb's throttle linkage, so no worries. Devon
Welcome from Florida! Try posting this in "The Mixing Shop" section, too. One of the Quadrajet experts may have some insight to the missing 70 thing.
Team Buick website has the chassis manuals. From that reference I see 702924 430 for Riviera- This is the carb you have, I think the 1 is part of the ME suffix. 702240 430 for Wildcat, Electra. Just recently I was looking at the 68 book and the carbs I have are not listed there, but I did find elsewhere they had 2 new numbers later in the run. The odd number is a puzzler for sure!
I just found that chassis manual and downloaded the sections of things I want to work on first. Good to see some experts are puzzled by the odd number too! Any recommendations on a Qjet carb rebuild kit? I'd like to give it a shot.....I haven't thrown a tool out of anger in awhile!
1969 49 State Buick Manual Trans. May 5th assembly appears to be a 2nd shift assembly. I see it's a Riv carb then all Trans. carb. Need the practice...hope this helps.
I think it may be the factory original carburetor. 29241 is really 7029241 as mentioned above and is a 1969 Buick Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl, and the last odd number digit is often stated to indicate it was intended for a manual transmission. However, 7029241 was used on all transmissions in the 1969 Buick Riviera 430, according to this: http://www.teufert.net/carbs/buick.htm ME is the customer code, not sure which customer that is, and 1259 means it was built the 125th day of 1969, which was May 5th, 1969 as mentioned above. This missing “70” I thought may mean it was a service replacement, but now I am not sure. It may be something that occurred on 1969 Quadrajets. See here for more discussion on the missing 70: https://classicoldsmobile.com/forum...4/rochester-quadrajet-carb-id-question-48875/
Welcome! Most of the 69 Buick Carbs are missing the 70 off the front of the number series. The 7029241 is the correct number for a Riviera and is not a manual transmission carb.
It could be a manual transmission carb though couldn’t? This was model number for all 1969 Buick Rivieras with a 430. Some 1969 Rivieras were manual transmission were they not? But I agree with you that since it came of an automatic 1969 Buick Riviera 430, it is likely the original carburetor to the car.
I am not a Riviera expert but the listing I looked at only shows a automatic transmission as a option on the 69 Riviera.
Looks like you are correct. Here is the 69 brochure. 7029241 was the 1969 Riviera 430 carburetor and was automatic even though the last digit is an odd number. https://www.xr793.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/1969-Buick.pdf
If the automatic was a Turbo 400, wouldn't the carb be the same as a 4-speed car, since it did not require a kick-down cable connected to the throttle?
Wow! Thank you guys for all the fantastic info! Here she is taken apart and cleaned. Well, cleaned about as far as I’m will to go.
