I'm not sure what the differences are between radios, I know I had a nice Blaupunkt in a Mercedes that wouldn't work at all over here. I never did find out why. I took a look at that ad, and from the picture I'd say that engine is a 401, not a 425. It has the Carter AFB carburetor, and it's painted green. Most 425 Buicks came with a Rochester Quadrijet, and were painted red. The only way to be positive would be to measure the bore. The engine code on the block is located on the front of the block, (passenger's side), and consists of two letters, 1966 401 is ML, MK, or MS, if I remember correctly. I can't remember what the codes for the 425 are. The trunk release button is red, and has two vacuum lines running from it. One goes back to the trunk, the other to a can mounted under the hood on the lower part of the passenger's side firewall. The release button is located on the left-hand side ledge inside the glove box area, below the glovebox light switch, which is black. Sounds like your car is a pretty nicely equiped one, can't wait to see some pictures.
Hey guess what!!!?? I hooked up my crusie control today and it works fine! Thats incredible! But you have to sett the speed about 10-15 miles above the speed you want to go, but still, it works and disconnects when I brake and stuff. I also found the motorcode and its an 401 MT. The trunk popper however is nowhere to be found. The button is gone but the hoses are there, plugged of course. I snapped some pics with my crappy cellphone camera, but hey, at least its something, right?
Looks cool. It is the same color combination as mine, mine is just a year later (although there was a major redesign between '66 & '67 as you probably know). You do need a new camera though... LOL
Tjena Fredrik!Be inte om urskt fr din engelska, verkar vara helt ok.Har sjlv en Skylark-72 350cui men har brjat med ett 455 projekt :3gears: ha det, vi hrs kanske. :Comp: Just welcoming my fellow country man in herdie birdie language, will not post threads again in viking mode/higbee
Yeah, I know, this Sony Ericsson phone I have really sucks. I need to buy a real camera Im thinking about changeing the color this fall to something red. Maybe Boyds red but I havent decided yet.
Not a bad looking car, even with the 1970's-bad-porno style fogginess of the lens! I like the black interior, mine is white, and collects dirt too easily. However, my dash panel is black, and with the chrome and wood all cleaned up it looks pretty cool. I'll check around to see if I have an extra of one of those vacuum trunk release switches. I know I used to have an extra laying around, it'll just be a question of finding it again. Here's a couple of shots of my car... with the brand-new motor that I just completed last fall.
Frederik: The link below is to the '66 Buick brochure, in German of all languages (at least it appears to be German)! I did not see a US brochure on the web for '66: http://storm.oldcarmanualproject.com/buick1966.htm
thats on sweet ride you got there! I hope that mine will look just as good as yours one day. Hey, if you find the "popper-switch" let me now ASAP its nowhere to be found here i Sweden. Today as i was on my way home from work I noticed that the dashboardlights were out. Since I have no instruction manual maybe you can help me? My three guesses are 1. Blown fuse. (which one?) 2. Broken lamps. (what kind and how do I get to them?) 3. Broken lightswitch. (lo beams works though) I havent been online here for quite a while now, I+ve been on vacation and stuff. Drove my buick about 800 km roundtrip and it performed excellent. Before the trip I changed oil and replaced a leaking trannyseal and got the frontend aligned. Next up on the checklist is to replace the cracked exhaustmanifold and change to a new dual exhaustsystem aswell. Also, economics permitting, the carburator will be rebuilt och a new paint job on the car. Im leaning towards red but maybe I should keep it white? Also I need to replace the canvas but thats really expensive....
Welcome!:beers2: There is a 1966 Buick Chassis Manual online here: http://www.teambuick.com/ It is located in the 'Reference' section. You will have to join the site to see all the data.:TU:
I always start with the obvious, namely that the dashlight dimmer is on the headlight switch. Again obvious, but if you were not familiar with the dimmer, did you try that first to make sure your dash lights are not just dimmed to off? Also, on my car, to turn the dash lights brighter the direction you turn is opposite of what I recall on most cars I've owned in the past. As to the color, keep it original, but its all up to what you like. Rob
I wasnt aware of the dashlight dimmer.... Do you simply turn the lightswitch knob or what? As for the chassis manual on teambuick-site, I have not found the proper chapter where the dashboard troubleshooter is. I have not found the part about fuses either. Little help please if you know where to find it.
Yes, on most US cars from that era, the headlight switch also serves as the dashboard light dimmer switch. You rotate the headlight Off/On switch one direction to brighten the dashboard lights and the other direction to dim the dashboard lights, and the dimmer will turn the dash lights off completely (dash lights and dimming functionality are only operable when the headlight switch is turned on).
very nice car, man. I love it :TU: As for a pointer on radios, try http://www.vintageautoradio.com/ . They have old school style reproduction radios, but more importantly, they will take your stock radio, redo all the insides, and make it perform like a new radio, with your stock look. Also try googling 'classic car radio conversion' for others that offer similar services. best of luck with the new ride
Besides the light switch, I'd also check the floor mounted hi-lo beam switch, these things are known to fail. Also; If your dash lights are not working, get someone to follow you and see if your tail-lights are still working. It used to be a feature on older Buicks that if one of the fuses went on the tail lights, the dashlights would not work. If you find that the switch on the dash is faulty, I may be able to find you a used one. I do know of one poor old Wildcat around here that has been a donor for my car. The headlight switches are the same for 66-67, but not for 68 or later, so don't buy a newer one. The fuses for the lights are found on a fuse block located about 30 cm up on the firewall from where your left foot would be if you were sitting in the driver's seat. They are glass fuses, and the older European ceramic fuses from a German car will not work. Use only the correct style and rated fuses, don't use anything larger, as you could burn down the car. The old trick of wrapping a burned fuse in cigarette package foil is not recommended at all, so if you see that in your car, remove it. I believe the fuse for the dash lights is a 10 amp short fuse, and it should be marked "INST", or "INST/ACCSY" . If you're still uncertain, I see if my service manual has a picture and I'll scan it. Round headlamps should still be available; Hella made some nice halogen ones, and a lot of export Mercedes from the 60s used the same round style. I think BMW used the same ones throughout the 70s and into the 80s, so you might start looking there. I still haven't made it out to the garage for that trunk switch, if I find it I'll PM you for your address. I've had a busy month with a new baby in the house, so I haven't been able to go looking for anything yet. As for replacing the roof; - I would decide which color you want to paint the car before you do it. A red car looks great with a white roof, whereas a white car looks better with a black roof and interior. There are kits availlable on-line for that car, but I suppose shipping will be expensive, especially with the glass-rear window. Note that you generally can not reuse the original rear window on a new top; - the window is laminated into the rear curtain and can not be easily retrofitted into a new kit. The last time I had a roof replaced it cost me $1500.00 CDN, -which isn't too bad. Did you wind up picking up that 401 that was advertised?
Well, first of all, congratulations to the baby! Best wishes! As for the dashlights, the dimmer had glitch. I didnt even know there was a dashdimmer ou: But its working fine know. Still cant decide which color I want. For the moment im leaning towards keeping it white. As for the 401 ad, I just bought the exhaustmanifolds. Ill bet that will come back and bite me in the ass....:moonu: Im going to try to change the manifolds anf the exhaustsystem this weekend, Im actually on my way out to the garage now, just stopped here to see if I could find any hints about changeing it. I sure hope the bolts wont break on me.....
Hello Fredrik, Regarding the headlamps, you can get H4 halogen replacement from Hansen Racing. They have a lot of wear and tear parts for our old cars. If you are lucky you have a retailer close to you where you can order and pick em up or just call them and have them send you the parts with mail. http://www.hansenracing.se/ Christian
Thanks, fo the tip but I have already changed all four lights for brand new sealed beams :TU: Right now Im changing exhaustmanifolds (grenrr) So far so good. But I also looked up the numbers on my carb - turns out its from a -65o No:
