Hi... I recently acquired my grandfather's 87 Buick Regal Limited. I'm very new to the car itself and older Buicks in general. I would like to make somewhat of a restoration project out of this car to get it performing better than these little rice cars you see on the road. Any and all suggestions are welcome mostly because I have no idea where to start. I'd also like to do as much as I can without breaking the bank. I'm a college student so I'm already 60k in debt haha. Thanks for all suggestions in advance. And to post a picture of the car should I make it an attachment?
Welcome Rick. You need to post 10 times then you can post pics. Now as far as the car, i'd say if it isn't goint to be a daily driver drop a 455 in there. It wouldn't take much to make it eat up the riccers. If you are going to drive it every day, maybe a small block or even a Turbo set up from a GN?:Brow:
I was thinking about looking into the turbo setup because it will be a daily driver. Now I really don't know much about cars, like I said this will be my first project. Where should I look to find a engine like the GN one? Also, do transmissions need to be replaced to keep up with a better engine? Lastly, is there a good website out there that I could browse for stuff like that? Oh and what kind of prices are usually associated with replacing an engine? Thanks
Well you could search evil bay or try to check out the BPG website. I'd start by posting in the "Parts wanted" section on both sites. You never know what these fine buick people have tucked away in their garages. And yes you need a good 200r tranny out of the same turbo car, sometimes you can find them together. Be prepared to spend 1 to 2 K for a full set up. Maybe more.
Ah ok, little bit more north than I am. I've been looking on ebay for engines but haven't found anything yet. A friend of mine is building a 350 for his 86 monte and he said it's a 5.0L high output 305 that's in it now. In comparison to the Olds 305 I have, how would that run?
I also have an 87 SS Monte and think the HO 305 is a boat anchor. IMO. But it's probably miles better then the olds mill.
Hahaha scratch that idea then. I'll keep looking out for the GN engines though. I just want this thing to be a sleeper for now.
Well we have access to a GN Turbo specialist right here on the board. And he's right here in New Brunswick, right off RT 18. Try PM'ing NJBuickRacer, maybe he can lead you to a nice Turbo Package, he knows these things inside and out. And he helps out all. His name is Artie. He used to work at DynoTech.
I do wish he had either the t-type or for that matter a GN sitting in his garage to sell me though. I've been researching these things for a while and would love to have that car.
If your interested I have a close friend that might sell a project that he allready completed the frame. Let me know but thats going to cost some cash to finish.
Well if I had a bunch of money laying around I'd love to. The GN is more of a dream car for me right now.
Here she is. Needs a little bit of body work ie., front right spacer and back left panel. Other than that I think I want to take off the canvas and repaint it white or go with a really dark gray. Any suggestions are more than welcome.
