Would a 455 be a good engine swap for my 84 electra. Currently it has the olds 307 in it. I just want some real horspower? If I put a 455 in it, will I still have the ecm? will it need a tranny swap also?
A 455 will fit in your chassis without too much trouble. I put one in a 77 Caprice and they are very similar. You'll need at least a healthy TH 350 tranny. You car likely came with a TH200 lockup. The 455 will bolt up but the TH 200s life span will be about 30 seconds. You'll lose all your stock ECM equipment. No provisions for sensors and the computer controlled Q-jets are around 500 cfm, way too lean for a 455. If you're looking to keep it simple, as much as I hate to admit it, an Olds 455 would be much easier. All Olds big and small block bracketry will interchange, motor mounts will stay the same, and no fuel line, distributor, and starter relocation issues. Although you'll still need a stronger trans.
Engine swap I think my electra has 200R tanny if that helps any. Also what would be better to buy a old electra with the 455 and the power? But how much HP will I get at the rear wheels with the 455 and the 350 tranny?
