$102 and climbing for repro chrome covers?! My local chrome shop will do show quality triple plating for $55 and I can pick up covers at the local u-pick lot for $10.

Hey Len, if it's that simple I'll take two or three pair...

Len, that is cheap for chrome plating--are you sure its 55 for the pr? Around here they get $75 per valve cover for show quality.

Well I have to admit I took them in with a few other things so it was a bit of a package deal, but if I took him 5 pairs I'm sure I could get that price again. Not that I'm offering to get in the valve cover business, I barely have enough time to work on my own.

    It has begun.....

A set of chromed '68 valve covers would be nice.

The pair I sent to the platers had too many pits so they declined to plate them..:ball: At least the plater was honest about what they would look like if he were to chrome plate them and he did not just go ahead anyway.

$75 each seems a bit steep. Next week I am taking my valve covers in to be chromed and I'll post what it's going to cost me. I don't think it will be that high because of how much I have paid for chrome in the past. The last things I had done was the grille and bumper on my '56. The grille was $125 and the bumper $100. I'm attaching a pic so you can see what he did.
Unless he has really raised his prices in the last 6 months I'm expecting well under $100 for the pair. Hope I don't get surprised

Jim, yes for giggles and grins let me know. I buddy of mine had his 72 Cutlass bumper done and he was charged $495 plus tax!!!! I called around and the prices around here (only called 2 places) ranged from 60 a pc to $75 a pc.
    Let me know.
    thanks

    Not a good comparison

GS bumpers ARE 4-5 times LARGER than the one in the picture. A good chrome job on a GS bumper will cost $400 & up, depending on just how nice you want it....

This guy wants $275 BIN for his valve covers!

I think if I really wanted some I would email Scott Miller and ask him how much he wants for a pair. I remember seeing a picture he posted with about 5 sets sitting on the floor.

    Re: Not a good comparison

Oh I agree that GS bumpers are at least twice as large as the 56 bumpers. It was just to show why I thought that $75 each for valve covers was steep.
Get this. Out here we have a company called Bumper Boys. They may go outside of CA but I dont know for sure. They are active at the car swap meets and are at Pomona every time. I stopped last time and asked them how much for my Lark bumper and they said $700.00 each. Yes EACH. :jd: After I picked my jaw up off of the ground I thanked the guy and walked away, too stunned to say anything. I'm going to take it to my guy and see what he will charge me. He doesnt straighten bumpers, but mine doesnt need it.
Anyway, bottom line. Chrome aint cheap no matter who does it

    $700ea Aye!

Actually, that sounds about right to me... I had both mine done for $600 (they just started up and wanted to see how well the guy could do buffing). The manager actually made them strip and replate a 2nd time, because he wasn't satified with the 1st job)! He also wanted the buffer to know he was NOT going to let anything leave the shop that was not something to be proud of. I was shocked how difficult it really was to get the bumper perfect, and they are!!! :TU:

Either way, I got a great deal, and I recall him saying those bumpers need to be about $700ea.:jd:

That is scary. :eek2: Man $700.00 to chrome a bumper. It must be reeeeeeeely labor intensive. Course I wouldn't want to buff and polish a Lark bumper. Heck, the older I get the less I want to even pick them up. It makes me tired just thinking about it.
Seriously, with all of the new air and ground pollution laws and the cost of labor and the cost of materials such as nickel I guess it's just reality for our time. Kinda sucks when it takes 25-30 Gs to build a decent car. :3gears:

You guys might want to consider Desert Dogs for your bumpers, they sound like they are considerably cheaper, and have gotten good reviews from board members.

Here is a thread discussing them.
