Hey guys I'm pulling my motor on my 1971 skylark this weekend to change out timing chain and get exhaust manifolds off now would this be a good time to put in a new cam or no? it's a stock 5.7 any suggestions not try to be a race car but a lil more power is always better. Let me know what you think.
    Thanks

I say no. There are lots of things you should do that will gain you some performance. Leave the cam where it is.

Larry, I am all ears. :) I am wondering the same thing. My rebuild is stock but I plan on adding my old Poston 113 when the times right.

I bet the OP has a 2bbl with single exhaust and a 2.56 rear. If that is the case, I would go 4bbl, dual exhaust, go 3.08 gears and optimize my ignition timing. A cam is way down on the list.

I need new exhaust also but I've been keeping it to document my cars origin, or so I hope. I have that double wall seperation issue just back from the manifold. What would the recommendation be for exhaust? Stainless steel or carbon and what size? How important is the muffler selection?

Buy a 2 1/2" aluminized system. Lots of places sell them. Mufflers? That's the question you need to answer. Personal preference. Listen to some cars and ask the owners what they are. That is what I did. I wanted a muffler with a nice deep sound, but not too loud at cruise. I settled on Magnaflow. Having said that, it's hard to beat the Walker 17749 long case mufflers. I had them for many years on my 2 1/2" x pipe system. I loved them, lots of guys use them.

Larry just curious why you're suggesting 3.08 and not not 3.23 or 3.55

3.08 is the perfect compromise between gas mileage and performance, that's all. If performance was more important, then by all means, 3.23, 3.42, 3.55.
