I've recently just put in my "new" motor.

After filling her up with water I've noticed an external small leak (decent drip) around cylinder #2 (passenger side, nearest radiator).

I've retorqued the heads per TA specs (iron 430s) and it seemed to have stopped.

Is there anything else I may be missing or concerned about? It's a fresh assembly (milled block and O ringed) and I haven't fired her up yet.

I'm hoping not to have to drain it and reinstall the head gaskets.

    Thanks,

    John

What Head Gaskets did you use ??

If Copper, where they the annealed ones ??

I've got to look at my ppwk to be sure. They definitely were not the copper.

They should be the standard sized Felpro. > Picked up from TA.

    Cracked

Did you have the heads magged? My iron 430 heads (1109 castings) had a crack in them that the machine shop pointed out. Those casting are prone to crack, might have been something over looked.

Negative on the heads. >Don't really want to know. Have too much $$$$ into them. If they are going to crack, let 'em break in two

For now, it looks like the re-torque did the trick. >>I hope

The o-rings could be holding the head up which could cause a slight water leak. You definately need to retorque. I prefer to retorque once also with the engine warm, the gasket gets a little softer thus allowing the o-ring to seat up into the gasket.
Also , depending on how far the o-ring was out of the block can make this situation a l ittle worse, once it's been retorqued warm, you should be fine. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES

The head gaskets are felpro (TA1723).

It looks like the dripping is gone from #2. Some puddling is occurring around #6. This was noticed this morning and is still present after going through the retorque sequence again.

Late last season I blew a chunk out of the lifter valley. This is the reblocked version of the same motor. These heads were part of the old combo (also O ringed) for the better part of 10 years.

There doesn't seem to be anything else that would prevent us from firing her up. We're hopeful Jim's thoughts are what's happening. It looks like I should have the time this weekend to bring the life back to her.

Some other Qs: About how much (if any) should I adjust the torque setting when using a 4.5" extension on a 1/2" drive? Would there be any value upping the torque from the TA recommendation about 10lbs all the way around?

Thanks to everyone for the help :TU:
