Howdy, I am looking for my neutral switch because my car will not crank.
Where is it located on a 1967 skylark and can i just jump it?

on a 70 it's on the base of the steering column. i believe there are purple and yellow wires going to it. again though this is for a 70.

If its a column shift its near the base of the column (on top), if its a floor shift its at the base of the shifter lever. I can check my diagrams when I get home later. It should be easy to jump either one, once you determine the correct wires to it. Just have to be careful when starting it!!!

Jump the purple wires. The other wires are for the reverse lights.

    Jumpin wires

Absolutely correct Dan :) , I just checked it in my chassis manual and whether its on the column or on the floor you need to jump the purple wires. Couch

I would recommend replacing it as opposed to jumping it. They are available as I just replaced one on my 67 Electra. Having the car able to start in any gear is not a comforting thought, particularly if you park with the back end against a wall! :Dou: Not to mention your back up lights probably aren't working either. Its a simple fix.

    Quick story:
The shifter cable on my 69 GS 350 (floor shift) seized up and locked the shifter in D. Being younger and not as smart, I tried to force it not realizing that the rods that slide out of the cable were bent. Well, in that forcing I ended up shattering the neutral safety switch.. I did manage to get R N D but nothing else out of the cable... Floor shift switches are very hard to find. I got luck and got an NOS cable from a buickperformance yahoogroup member. I jumped the purple wires and installed a rocker switch for the reverse lights that popped up out of the console (very shadetree but worked).

I went drag racing at Pomona when they were still doing the street legals. While in tech the inspector notices the wire coming out of the console and called me on the switch. He let me race...
Later on that day, I was in the line where the staging lanes merge down to 2 lanes, things move slowly at pomona so its start car, move 10 feet, stop engine. Well, sure enough, I started it in drive and came within 2 inches of rear ending the car in front of me... Shortly after this almost heartattack I got on ebay and was able to find the correct switch.

Moral? Even if you are careful it is still nice to have the switch because accidents happen....
