i'm going to look at an 83 regal T-type the guy wants 2200.00 for it. my questions are 1. is the rear an 8.5 or something less desireable? 2. what are the problem areas on these cars that i need to look for? 3. is 2200.00 a fair price for a rust free example with T-tops, cruise, A/C etc?
#1: The 8.5 didn't appear until 84, the 83 will have the 7.5 rear. #2 Body-wise look for cracks in the doors by the mirror base, and the roof for cracking along the "b" post. The only other trouble spot is the windshield header which you won't see until you remove the weatherstrip from the t-top openings. #3: $2200 may be a little high, carb'ed turbo cars are generally not as desired as the SFI versions, they can be a pain in the butt to tune and parts aren't always easy to find. (the "before black" section on turbobuick.com is a good source for reference) I would probably offer 1800 and do a V8 or 86-87 turbo swap.
Thanks for the tips. i went and looked the car over and drove it..seems pretty gutless. body is very solid with no rust and even the door hinges are firm. engine runs smoothly but smokes when the turbo kicks in. supposedly had an engine rebuild about 20,000 miles ago but the car has been sitting the last 5 years and only driven once in a while. the guy is holding firm at 2000.00
