Guys I'm kind of new to Hot Rodding the 455 and I'm looking for some cheap combo suggestions.

I always see plenty of 455 at my local Pick-N-Pull so finding any year or combination should not be a problem. I was going to look for a block with no ridge and maybe rering and bearing. I will inspect the heads for worn valve guides and possible bowl hog.

It will be going in my 67 GS California basically for a clean driver that I will bracket race weekly. I would like to do it in classic Buick style. Stock appearing with AC. It will have Cast iron manifolds and Q-jet with A/C and power brakes will be added later. Rear end gear will be about 2.73 depending on what's available at the boneyard and a cheap corvette stall converter about 2000.

I was thinking of a 71 455 that has the improved oiling but can still take the steel shim with a set of 67 430 heads. If I have it right? Anything better? Actually I used to have a SF code that ran on 87 with the stock cam so maybe If I can find one and put some duration in it to bleed of some pressure I'll be okay.

Basically the only new part I want to buy is a cam kit.

What combo using these guidelines would give me the best ET? Any ET predictions?

The 71 is fine(430 heads aren't very much better, so if you don't have them don't bother). Get a good set of stage 1 springs from TA, or Poston, and go with the Poston GS113 or simular cam. Freshin up the motor and rum a 1in. carb spacer, it will pull like a freight train from 2300-5500rpm.

And go with a 2500 stall.

    hope this helps

What about the 113A? It sounds like a newer grind but I have yet to see the specs on it. I guess Poston does not have a working website.

    What brand converter works best?

What kind of an ET do you think it would run in my strip down 67 post?

    Thanks

The 113a is designed for higher comp. engines, I would stick with the 113. I run a loose 2800 by Coan(it is a great converter).
I think you can get a decent TCI converter cheap. I would guess a low 13 mabie in the 12's if you get good gears(3:73:1 works good for me)

    Hope this helps...

I'm running the stock intake manifold. What type of spacer should I use? The four hole or open?

Also what's going on with lifters. Sounds like there have been some problems judging by some posts I've read.

In a all-IRON engine with POS 113 cam, I ran 13.20's with POS hyper pistons, Holley 800cfm D.P., stock converter, 3.90 gears, and slicks, STOCK everything else. Would have easily been in (probably LOW!!) twelves with better pistons, headwork, intake, headers and better fuel system. Changed everything and use ground-pounding TA 510 now.

I have a POS 113 for sale right now in the For Sale section here. It needs a new home, as I will prolly never use it again. Nothing wrong with it.

    PM me if interested.
