Got a used boat (70 hp evinrude pontoon) that drains the batt. PO put on a disc s/w but I think it's also draining while running. What volts should I have coming off the gen vs the batt, and where/how should I test it? The dash volt meter looks like 12v all the time, so I'm thinking the gen isn't putting out. Any help is appreciated. Boat is 300 mi from here going up to work on it Sunday, I'm assuming it is a combined starter/generator setup. o No: Gene
Sounds like the unit is not charging. 1) You can put a AMP meter between the battery and the pos. post. With nothing on it should read 0 amps. Start with a large scale and work your way down. 2) With motor running, slightly rev'ed, you should have 13.5 to 14.5 volts to the battery. 3) If step one is 0 and step 2 is the same voltage as the battery when off. Then the last confirming test is to start the boat and with it running, pull one of the battery cables, I would think that the engine would die. It's running off the battery only. Some have a generator, some use a magneto for charging, which is under the flywheel. Rich
