    Mark,

I don't know much about them but previously bought a 8.2 posi with a 3.36 gear. I took them both apart yesterday and they were different. I had planned to use the posi from the 3.36 on the 2.93 gear set. My '70 rear end had a different (larger) bearing on one side but more importantly the bolts holding the ring gear on were both a different size and were spaced apart differently. The posi for the 3.36 had smaller bolts holding on the ring gear and were right hand threaded, the 2.93 had left hand threaded bolts. I've since been told I need to get a 2 series posi.

    Thanks!

3.36 is a chevy gear to my knowledge, chevy 8.2 and buick/pontiac are different...heres some help to id, post some pics of your housing with the cover we will help you ID...

    2.93 is a 3 seies gear, so 2.93s,3.08,3.23,3.31,3.36,3.42, and,3,55 are consider a 3 series gear,

and i understand a 3.64 maybe too, but i always though 3.64,3.70,3,73,3.90.4.10 etc was 4 series

some of the ratios are buick/pont and some are chevy, and there diffs in 8.5s too

left hand threads are 8.5 and is a 71 up rear, but could easily be under a 70, lets figure out what ya have and then whe can ficure what you need..
monzaz here on the forum is the rear end GOD he will help if needed, hes a good guy...

    this is a buick 8.2

this is the fooler right here..it looks like and 8.5 but its actually a 71 8.2 out of a chevelle..no steps on the bottom

    ok..but chevy 3.36 would be different than a buicks..actually i thing chevys version is a 3.31

  9. chevy also had a 3.36 ratio 8.2 10 bolt, but you are correct in that it wont work in a buick. i think the chevy 3.31 was a 12 bolt ratio.

    SmittyDawg Need another garage....

I have an 2.93 posi 8.2 rear end in my '70 GS455. I intend to change that to prolly 3.42 some day, but have been told that I need a 3 series carrier to do that....that 3 series gears won't work with the 2.93 carrier.

I know nothing about the specifics of this, but the gentleman who told me this has built a LOT of Buick rear ends.....just hoping you get the right stuff!

Yes, 3.31 is a Chevy 12 bolt only factory ratio. 3.36 is a specific Chevy 8.2 10 bolt ratio, 67 and newer I believe.

I am feeling the 3:36 chevy thing too. I know because I have this in my Chevy rear..... I left a message with Jim aka MONZAZ to ask the question also. If yours is out of a 67 buick it should fit your tired 70's rear... I wonder if there are markings that would identify the rear and make identification 100%.

  13. 68-70 buick 8.2 uses two different size carrier bearings. the 64-67 carrier will not fit without an adapter. Monzaz makes an adapter to allow the use of the earlier carrier in the later rears if i remember correctly.

I have a 70 8.2 posi unit with a 2.93 installed. Bearings are installed on carrier and pinoin and are in good shape. PM me if interested. Mike

    Woodmaster Five Bufords....

You are correct...I found the necessary info on Monzaz's excellent website...my 3.36 is the 8.2 for the '64 to '67 and the 2.93 is an 8.2 for my '70GS. He certainly is the authority on these rear ends. I may save this rear end for my '67 and just try to find the correct Posi for the 2.93 rear end versus using an adapter. Thanks for the info!

As I understand it, you are correct, you would need a 3 series carrier.

    Thanks!
