Looking for a part number for a new carrier that will accept 3.23 gears, or, someone have a used GM unit thay would like to sell?? I'm staying with the 3.23's, so I'll need a 2 series posi unit(2.93-3.23) I think? From what I understand the break-off is 2.56-2.73, 2.93-3.23, 3.31-3.90?? Could be wrong, I just know I need something for a 3.23:TU: Thanks guy's
Tom Check with Dave Hemker, I think that he had access to some "posi" units for the 8.2 rear. Did you find a car for Danielle yet?
Tom there is a way to modify the earlier 64-67 8.2 posi carriers to work on the 68-70 cars. check with Jim aka Monzaz on the board. several aftermarket carriers available for the earlier 8.2 rears including the eaton clutch style.
Aurburn 2:93 3:08 Pontiac replacement unit . The ring gear bolts will have to be opened to 7/16 . Just order it through Jim of Fabcraft already done . I have done several gear sets & posi units.. Nick
Good luck with that! My 8.2 ate the gears and Hemker had me get Richmond gears and an Eaton posi unit to convert it. Never worked. I still own these parts, and the 8.2 is still at Hemker's. Had to buy a whole different rear for the car.
what are you doing to address the carrier bearings? it's my understanding that on the 68-70 buick 8.2 the passenger side bearing is different than the drivers side. this is a bigger issue than the ring gear bolts
8.2 Pontiac gears WILL NEVER work in the 1968-1970 10 bolt BUICK rear. I sell the modified Auburn aftermarket posi unit to fit the 3.23 and 3.42 ratio BUICK 8.2 1968-1970 rear. We also can install the correct conversion bearing on the posi so it will bolt right in and give FREE set up help Free carrier shim with the posi all for EASE of installation. 2.73 and 2.93 are another different carrier and we sell them also. THE 3.64 and steeper are all on the PONTIAC 3.36 3.55 3.73 3.90 4.22 carrier...The only way we can make these fit is to CUSTOM bush the driver side carrier bearing to increase the diameter so we can get the larger a36 bearing set to fit. WE can get EATON and AUburn units BOTH need the bushed mods done to the driver side carrier bearing. Your 3.23 stock gears will bolt right up to the Aftermarket Auburn carrier and All you will need to do is reshim the carrier side to side. NO PINION set-up necessary as long as you are using gears that ran well in the original set-up.
